If you want to enjoy the city of Reykjavik, I encourage everyone to to use Thorsteinn's place. It was clean and welcoming. The best part is the proximity to the city, well worth a car rental.

Thorsteinn's place is convenient to both bus lines and shopping for your stay in Reykjavik. The apartment is about 2 miles from the city center and the neighborhood is safe. You can actually walk to the city center (which I did) and the sidewalks are well lit and wide. The walk is an easy one if you are so inclined. Right across the (major) road from the apartment is a large selection of shops and stores to buy groceries etc. Also across the road is a state run liquor store to buy beer, wine and alcohol if you want. It is my understanding, that besides restaurants and bars, that is the only place to buy beer or wine in Iceland. And right down the road is the Kringla Mall (probably within a mile). It is a high end mall with lots of shops and some restaurants if you like malls (not my thing). The apartment is very nice. The bed is great, and the shower is good. The kitchen is well stocked with spices etc so if you want to cook you can. I opted for breakfast every day, so I purchased the requisite breakfast stuff at the 24 hour supermarket across the highway. That market also sells prepared foods so if you want to eat in and not cook, it is an option. Besides the 24 hour Kauphas (I think that is the name) there is a smaller Bonus market and a market specializing in vegetables. In addition, there is a very small Asian market. But I mean "small". The selection of restaurants close by is not overwhelming. There are a few. I used Trip Advisor to find them. There was a highly rated burger place close by, but being August, it was closed while I was there. There is a vegetarian friendly place in the shops across the way as well as several coffee shops and bistros. There is also a local pizza place (not in the shopping area across the street). It is a great pizza place, check it out on Trip Advisor - or ask Thorsteinn. As I mentioned before, get a pass from the tourist office. I am not sure what it is called since I was not the clever to buy one. But it offers you entrance to all of the museums, unrestricted bus usage on the local buses, and other benefits. The intercity buses accept credit cards on the buses, but the local buses DO NOT. I found out the hard way. Also, as I mentioned earlier, taxis are out of the question. I took three in the 17 days I was in Iceland. The cheapest was $24.00 and that was for less than two miles. So do yourself (and your wallet) a favor, no taxis.

We had a wonderful stay here! Would really recommend it esp if you are taking your own car around Iceland, there is free and easy parking and tons of space in the apartment :) Very comfortable and great host!

This rental is a hidden gem Whether you rent a ca or are walking it, you'll find that Thorsreinn's place is so convenient: if you're planning to go to central Reykjavik, close to mid-borg, literally walking ! distance to a 24 hour super market!! Thorsteinn took the time to keep in contact with me, and show care and concern for his guests.. A big mahalo!!

Thorsteinn's place was very comfortable and although a bit out of town it was very easy to get public transport into the centre. The only drawback was the light at night, we used eay patches.
