There is two ways to travel. One is book an expensive hotel, order room service and sit by the pool. The other, is Air B&B and stay with an amazing family and really get to know the culture. Renting the Pia Family cottage was like coming home to your Italian relatives who you never met but treated you like you were always their favorite relative. High up on the the hill top,( not too high to walk to) overlooking Ischia's Forio's coast and famous thermals, the Pia family Cottage is as delightful as the family who presides over it. The villa has two of these cottages once built for extended family that would come and vacation in the summers. Simple accommodations, clean, comfortable, with a large bathroom, ( plenty of hot water and good water pressure) bedroom and kitchenette, and lovely covered porch, it couldn't be more charming. But, it was really all about the views and the surprises that kept coming to my door each day. Roberta's grandmother had just cooked fusilli with ricotta the day that I arrived and invited me to eat and have a glass of wine with her husband. Roberta's father, a handsome Carabinieri, took me not only to get my scooter, which he negotiated the best price for me, also took me shopping, and drove me around town pointing out local landmarks. He also helped me with my limited Italian. Anna, his wife made me pizza, homemade tomato sauce, deserts, stuffed pizza, etc etc etc and would send her husband or daughter to my door each night with some perfectly prepared classic Neapolitan dish. Who when I was leaving cried as she waved goodbye. I mean this was out of a movie. I have stayed at enough AirB&B places to know that this one is a treasure. I am both happy and sad because I know that soon this place will be booked every summer as more find out about how wonderful the cottage and the family is who presides over it, is. But, I am very happy for the Pia's because they deserve to have their place full to the brim with happy vacationers who they will no doubt make all of them feel like family the moment they arrive.
