If you consider yourself a musician, artist, or writer...if terms like "The Shire" or "English countryside" appeal to you...if you find both rest and rejuvenation in an outdoor setting…
Then you will find your muse in the former personal residence of world-renowned designer and architect Ray Jansma. He custom-built this home for his family in 1951.
My wife and I recently bought the former residence of the late Ray Jansma. We are in the process of restoring it and are now opening it up to you.
Our realtor remarked that in his 30-year-long career this was his favorite home. One visitor described it, along with the Cappon House in Holland, a “must-see home in Michigan.”
The whimsical style of Jansma, who blends Frank Lloyd Wright with literary Hobbiton, will awaken your imagination. (The home even has a clock tower!) Also on the property: a spacious workshop where Jansma built the wooden sailboat that now sails the Great Lakes and ports in Chicago (or so we’ve been told).
You will have a private bedroom and bathroom all to yourself.
You may use our workshop for writing, art or music as well.
You may join us in our living room or kitchen- this is a shared space when our family is home.

We love to host and are willing to engage you as much or as little as you like.
The estate is just four minutes north of small-town Fremont. You’ll be surrounded by five acres of trees and many more acres of horse farms (the Gerber family’s horse farm, in fact, boarders our property to the north).
During your stay, you’ll be offered the “Chapel Room”, so-named for it’s resemblance to a Spanish Mission’s chapel such as you would find in southwestern United States. It’s the most spacious room in the house with private bath, private entrance, and a state-of-the-art heating/cooling system. It feels a little bit like an apartment with plenty of work space.
It does NOT have a kitchen, but our family kitchen is yours to use! Awake each morning to a complementary pot of tea or coffee and Erin’s specialty, brown sugar coffee cake. For a modest up-charge of $10, you may turn your experience into that of a Bed & Breakfast: we’ll prepare breakfast for you!
Jeff is the owner of a heritage farmer’s meat market (you may ask him about it during your stay) and is a writer with close ties to the Grand Rapids craft brew scene.
The Dubas are parents to two young girls, ages 4 and 2, both delightful and precocious. If the occasional sounds of family life on the opposite side of the house where you’ll be staying will bother you in the least, then—regrettably—this may not be the right time for you to stay with us.
Our interests include: Travel (at home and abroad); Education; Economics; Theology; Alternative medicine; Psychology; Philosophy; the Classics; Film; Business; Entrepreneurialism; Food and Beverage; History; Culture; the Outdoors; Conservation; Hiking, Biking, and Skiing...
We are a family of four + cat from the city who recently moved to rural and small town life.
What brought us to the country from the fabulous city of Grand Rapids? We found a magical house in an enchanted wood. It charmed us and now we are entwined.
Jeff is a homemade chef whose steak or burger can best the most expensive restaurants. He is a writer, a lover of books and philosophy, the outdoors and good company.
Erin spent her childhood in the country and is content to return to chirping spring frogs and bright starry night skies. She prefers to make things from scratch, is a beginner forager, and has plans to homeschool, keep bees, and grow herbs. What she loves best is hosting friends for dinner or tea.
Two little people also reside on this property who love to get dirty, chase cats, and dress up.
Lastly we have Harlo the cat, our newest roommate who likes to follow the children around when they are not chasing him.
