We were very happy we stayed in Katjwik aan Zee. The view out the window is beautiful. You see a pasture leading to an ocean. I ran on the beach each morning. We felt like we were able too see a lot getting to stay in this town and then take the bus and train into Amsterdam and Haarlem. We had never been to the Netherlands before this trip. We went into Amsterdam one of the days and took Mike's Bike Tour (the 4 hour country tour). Mom was worried she couldn't do the bike tour, but it was a very leisure ride. We stopped often and we were very pleased with the windmills, cheese farm and clog factory. It ended up being my mom's favorite part of the trip. The second day, we went to the Corrie ten Boom house. If you haven't read The Hiding Place, which tells the story of this Ten Boom family running underground work out of their home during WWII to save Jews, put it on your reading list. We also visited the Anne Frank home that night at 8pm. We booked the half hour introduction followed by the entry into the Anne Frank Huis. The buses and trains run until midnight so we could still take public transit back to Katwijk aan Zee. We had a wonderful time. Our hosts made the check-in and check-out super easy. We had more than we needed with the bedrooms all prepped, the towels, Netflix, and even a washer (which we didn't use, but was nice to know they had). We had a great time. I would stay at the home of these family-oriented people any day.
