We offer a proper Orcadian welcome. We like to meet you at arrival time to make sure you have all the information you need, and to see you settled in. There is a small welcome pack with Orkney produce. We can be contacted during your stay, and we offer tours or seminars on Scottish and Orcadian literature, culture, wildlife, history etc.
This house is ideal for wildlife lovers. Red Throated Divers pass over the back garden in the summer evenings, calling as they return to their nest. Short Eared Owls and Hen Harriers hunt voles in the neighbouring fields, and can be viewed from the windows. Seals and otters frequent the shore just ten minutes' walk away.
You may wish to book a winter break for the spectacular, bracing weather, winter wildfowl watching at Evie Sound, or the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights - there is no light pollution here. The house is cosy and warm, with a lovely real fire - great to sit at on a winter evening with a dram or Orkney beer.
Interested in language or literature? The owner's husband is Dr Simon W. Hall, an award-winning Orcadian author, poet, and academic, who has written and lectured extensively on Orkney writers and Scottish Literature, including George Mackay Brown and others. A seminar on Orkney writers or a literary tour with Simon are available as an optional extra. A Burns Supper luxury weekend is also available. Please enquire for details.
The house has an extensive library of Orkney books - from medieval sagas to modern novels and poetry. Turn your holiday into a relaxing reading week, and immerse yourself in real Orkney culture. We are both native speakers of the Orkney Dialect 'Orcadian', and are happy to give you a few tips - or a full lesson if you like :)
Please note, the Drill Hall Cottage is intended as a quiet retreat - there is no wifi in the property.
We ask guests to respect the property. Property is served by a septic tank, so absolutely nothing but toilet paper must go down the toilet or drains - strictly no food waste, sanitary items etc. Please ensure all guests are aware of this. If drain blocks and it is discovered that unsuitable items have been put down drains, an emergency plumbing call out charge applies. This is a non-smoking property. Thank you.
We are an Orcadian family living on a small farm in Evie. Our family consists of myself, Linda, my husband, Simon, our children, Anja and Alexander, our cat and our Dandie Dinmont Terrier. We love Orkney and have stayed here all our lives except to go away to study.
We love to travel and have found using AirBnB great as it lets us experience to culture of wherever we're visiting by staying with locals.
We have a small holding of sheep and if you're visiting at lambing time you're welcome to come and meet the new additions.
We look forward to welcoming you to our property and sharing the true beauty of Orkney with you!
