As seen on HGTV! This little house is a sweet retreat in SE Portland, between Mt. Tabor Park & the Hawthorne district. At 440sf, it's a bit larger than a typical tiny house, and has lots of green design features to keep you intrigued and entertained.

The house is currently available for stays of at least a month.

Prostor

If you've ever wondered what it's like to live in a well-designed small house, you can find out here. Check out the:
- alternating tread stairway
- cozy loft
- concrete counters
- nicely equipped kitchen
- oculus that passes light into the kitchen
- classic bent-plywood lounge chairs
- abundant natural light
- huge bolster on the Twilight sleep sofa.

All these things are meant to keep the quality of living high, even though the space is small.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD & VOLCANO
Mt. Tabor Park is only 1 block away and is beautiful for running, walking, and tennis. It's a huge, forested park, and -- BONUS! -- a dormant volcano. I'm pretty sure it won't erupt while you're here, but no guarantees. :)

The Hawthorne strip with all its fantastic businesses -- Albina Press, Apizza Scholls, Por Que No, etc. starts half a mile away. Further out but still in this part of SE Portland are Belmont and Division streets, home to lots of dining -- Pok Pok is nationally-known, and deservedly so, and Salt & Straw makes the most amazing ice cream flavors you would never think of.

HOW WAS THE HOUSE CREATED?
This structure was built in 1922 as a garage, but we converted it to a house in 2006.

DOES IT STILL FEEL LIKE A GARAGE?
No, since the building was extensively restructured and insulated. The only sign it was once a garage is the concrete floor on the main level, which is cool to the touch and still a bit uneven in places -- the resurfacing work left a few imperfections. The loft level has a cork floor.

HOW MANY DOES IT SLEEP?
The house sleeps 1 to 3 people, depending on your mattress preferences and length of stay.
- It's wonderful for 1 person for long-term stays.
- It's really, really nice for couples or good friends for a week or so.
- It's workable for 3 people for shorter stays -- if two of you don't mind sharing a bed. Call it a tiny house adventure.

WHAT ARE THE BEDS LIKE, EXACTLY?
There are two beds to choose from.
(1) In the loft, a comfy full-size model (54x75 inches, slightly smaller than queen). This is a real bed on a very low frame, with a linen duvet cover. This can sleep 1 or 2 people depending on your need for width.
(2) In the living area, the fabulous Twilight sleeper sofa. We tried a lot of convertible sofas and this was the only one we found worth sleeping on. It's got a firm foam mattress in Twin XL size (39x80 inches), which is good for a taller person. You will need to put the sheets (provided) on this one. The conversion is really simple -- you just move the big bolster back and put on the sheets. This sleeps 1 person.

ARE YOU LEGAL?
Yes, we are a fully permitted short-term rental under Portland's rules.

CAN I COOK?
Yes! The kitchen has a standard fridge, lots of pull-out storage, a 2 burner gas cooktop, a convection microwave, dishes (Fiestaware!), basic cooking supplies, and a Chemex coffee and tea maker. We'll provide you with some excellent coffee beans and tea leaves for the Chemex. The only thing missing here is a full size oven, but as long as you're not making whole turkeys or lasagnas, you'll be okay.

THE BATHROOM?
Yes, it's your own. Plain but nice. Skylight. Shower stall, no bathtub.

THE SPECIAL STAIRWAY?
Standard stairways take up too much volume to be useful in tiny houses. An alternating tread stairway saves space while feeling comfortable by giving separate treads for left and right feet. It really works! There's just one rule -- ALWAYS hold on to the banister.

GREEN FEATURES?
- Double wall structure with lots of insulation
- High efficiency gas fireplace controlled by thermostat
- LED lights throughout
- Tankless hot water heater
- Original siding
- Cork floor in loft
- Resurfaced concrete floor on main level

SUMMER GUESTS PLEASE NOTE
This place does not have air conditioning. You probably won't need it, because generally Portland has a mild climate, and the house is well insulated. However, Portland does get a few hot spells each summer, and it's hard to know when they will happen. We have fans!

Ostale napomene

NO TV, YES INTERNET.
To us, this house is a retreat, so there is no TV. But if you must get your fix, wireless internet is available. Speed is usually sufficient to stream Netflix at standard (not HD) quality.

A LITTLE LIBRARY
Secreted in a closet by the upstairs bed, you'll find a little library of paperbacks -- sci fi, romance, the occasional piece of actual literature. The loft is a nice place to hide out and get lost in a story.

KIDS!?
Most kids love the space, and immediately go to play in the loft and peek down through the plexiglass oculus. However, please note the loft is high and the floor is hard. If your kid has a natural idea of how to move safely in such an environment -- for example if they would not climb on the railing -- they'll be fine. Not every kid fits this description (consider a typical 2-year old), but for those who do, this can be a very special retreat.

PETS?!
This is the most frequently asked question about our tiny house. We love animals, but regretfully cannot allow pets at this time.

YOUR HOSTS
We (i.e. me, Martin, and my wife and son) live next door in the "big" house. At least one of us will be in town during your stay. We may be too occupied to chat much, but we can help with directions, restaurant tips, etc. The best way to contact us is by sending me (Martin) a text message.

We like to keep arrangements as straightforward as possible. We charge no cleaning fee, and request only a modest security deposit (which is held and returned by AirBnb). We are always open to your ideas about how to make the experience of staying at the tiny house better.

This was our first time using Airbnb and it was an awesome experience. This tiny house is located in a beautiful neighborhood close to great restaurants. We came when Portland had snow and Martin made sure to check up on us. House was nice and cozy. Highly recommended!

This tiny home was perfect for my solo trip to Portland! Martin was an excellent host; he allowed me to check-in early when travel plans shifted, and made sure I had everything I needed throughout the week. And the location couldn't have been better. It's nestled between Mt. Tabor Park and a plethora of coffee shops, restaurant/bars and unique clothing boutiques. Every inch of this tiny home was designed to maximize space as well as comfort, which resulted in it not feeling tiny at all!

Martin's Tiny house is a little slice of magic in this dull world. Aside from being a great place to stay in an engaging neighborhood, it was interesting to observe the design and thought that went into transforming the space into this perfect blend of utilitarianism and elegance. It's very well done with no detail unaddressed. You will also be provided with an excellent guide to the area that is car, bike, and pedestrian friendly. There are great restaurants, coops, and everything else you'll need within walking distance.

We had a WONDERFUL stay at the Tiny House on a Tiny Volcano! The location was perfect for us, and the proximity to Mt. Tabor park was an added bonus. Martin was very helpful, always making sure we had everything we needed, while allowing us to just enjoy our vacation. The property is as described, and has tons of character. We would definitely recommend booking a visit here. Thanks, Martin!

The tiny house was wonderful! It was in such a great neighborhood, within walking distance of so much, driving to downtown and other areas was a breeze and there is even a really nice park SO close- Mt Tabor! Definitely eat at Por Que No, you won't regret it! Martin was really friendly and helpful, as well. Overall, great place to stay for vacation!

I'm a long-time Portland resident who's worked as a forest ecologist, a writer, and a stay-at-home dad. I'm an aficionado of what might be called "practical architecture" or "low design" -- stuff that really works, as opposed to just looking good. Of course it's nice if it look…
