Kilkenny is 70 minutes yet feels a million miles from Metropolitan DC. We are nestled in horse country of the Northern Virginia Piedmont. We are near wineries, orchards, Appalachian Trail Heads, Shenandoah National Park, antique shops, the Inn at Little Washington, and Old Towns: Warrenton, Culpeper and Front Royal. Kilkenny is an easy place to be while taking advantage of all the Northern Piedmont and the Blue Ridge has to offer. Know that my dogs, a cat and a pony share Kilkenny Retreat too.
Although Kilkenny Retreat is a suite in a home, there is a sense of privacy along with a small balcony facing NE for for those who like to watch the sun and moon rise. The space offers a dressing area, where guests will find a small fridge (stocked with sodas, juices and coffee extras), microwave (popcorn always available), a 2-slice toaster, a 5-cup coffee maker (en suite) and good tea choices. There is a small desk for those needing to do a bit of work (horrors). The dressing room connects your private bathroom to the main suite. The bathroom is bathed in natural light with floor to ceiling windows and a very large, walk-in shower - big enough for two! We have Cotten, hypo allergenic and/or goose down filled quilts to keep you warm and cozy in the winter months. Our bath towels are absorbent and soft and all our linens are washed in detergent free products. Plenty of magazines, coloring books, and beanie babies for the young and young at heart are in baskets all around the suite. Smoking/vaping of whatever you enjoy is permitted on the Juliet balcony.
We are an inexpensive alternative for a night's stay to those seeking to dine at the Inn at Little Washington. The Inn is a 20 minute drive. With advance notice, we are happy to offer car service to and from the Inn, so you may drink their fine wines throughout your meal, without concern for driving a country road a bit tipsy!
Please read the "other things to note" before deciding to book.
There is a pool here that guests may enjoy - typically open from mid May to September

After a lifetime in DC, I made the great escape 7 years ago to the VA Piedmont. I am willing and ready to offer ideas of daytime trips and activities. There is a great deal to do here, from wine tasting to apple picking to visiting Revolutionary and Civil War sites. Day hiking is all around us - Sky Meadows, Old Rag Mountain, white Oak Canyon, Bull Run, Appalachian Trail Heads - or simply take a walk down Kilkenny Road.
The Inn at Little Washington is a 20 minute drive from Kilkenny. Spend your fortune on dinner, then come stay with me. With advance notice, I will provide car service to and from the Inn for dining, so that you may drink their fine wines throughout your meal without concern for arriving home safely.
Also - I know every alley and sidewalk in my hometown of D.C. Happy to send folks on D.C. Day trips - car to metro to downtown or around town - the whole nine yards.
Two items of note, as a nod to full disclosure-
(1) Because of the rural nature of Kilkenny, we have limited internet. We are on satellite internet here - that means two things, we are limited to 15 GB's of download per month (yeah really), this makes streaming anything not feasible. There is buffering always and a stiff breeze or clouds may interfere at any moment. The internet is fine for checking email and cruising your social media sites, however that is about it. The Orlean Market, a mile from Kilkenny and Starbucks in Warrenton have free high speed. The TV in the suite has a DVD player built-in and we have our own selection of TV shows and Movies (mostly comedies). We offer Direct TV basic service.
(2) This is a home with dogs - be they my dogs, the latest rescue, vacationing friends dogs, there are 4 - 8 dogs here at any given moment. The dogs are not housed on the airbnb side of the farm house, which is one half of my house that also includes a shared kitchen. The house is all wood floors, you may hear puppy nails on a wood floor. You will certainly see the dogs in my front yard and pasture, however fencing separates us outside as well. Dogs in our care, live with my pups. They are NOT kenneled. When people come and go from the property, there is certainly dog barking. Depending on the dogs in-house depends on the amount of barking. Dogs may appear aggressive in their barking as they feel attached and protective of me and of Kilkenny. However, no dog in our care is aggressive or dominant - a true oxymoron in caring for rescues or homing dogs temporarily. There would be a lot of injured pups if an aggressive dog were homed here. The dogs may hear something in the middle of the night that may result in their barking. It is rare, however, if it happens to you, then "rare" is meaningless. A love and understanding of dogs leads to a more successful stay for all.
Dogs, Horses - negotiable
Smoking of whatever you enjoy smoking may happen outside and on the balcony of your suite - only not indoors.
We are on well water here, so that means no fancy pants, city-wide sewer system. And what that means is nothing but your bodily gifts and toilet paper may be flushed down the toilet.
Finally - internet - first please do not mistake the fact that we have wifi as meaning we have high speed internet. The house is wifi'd, however our provider is satellite internet (our only choice) and often it crawls. We are given a download max of 15 GB monthly. So streaming movies or TV is not possible (unless between 2:00 am and 7:00 am as our capacity bumps up to 50 GB during those hours). There is a TV in the suite with built in DVD and we have left a few of our favorite DVD's in the TV stand. Checking email and social media is workable, and that about sums up satellite internet.
Know also that cell service happens, however can be spotty---welcome to the country, folks!
