Hi Diane, I’m terribly sorry that you were a victim of crime. We’ve never had a single incident at the cottage before and considered ourselves lucky because other guest houses have been as guests occasionally leave windows or doors open. We normally tell foreigners to be mindful that crime is an issue in South Africa but I will take your advice and be sure to let all South Africans know that despite the pleasant Karoo atmosphere we should always close doors properly to avoid theft.
The other element is that despite the investigation afterwards into the burglary there was still no force of entry found so the police could not conclusively rule it as any sort of break in as they had no evidence or a crime scene to work with. We did our best to follow up with a police report but they closed the matter as they ruled it was only an alleged break in. I deeply apologise for this inconvenience, and I’m sorry that it was a bad experience for you. I’m not writing this off at all, we’ve never had any other incidents over years of airbnb’ing so I do take guest security quite seriously but we want to provide an experience of pleasant Karoo life so we only do basic locks and no bars. That being said, no windows were broken so bars wouldn’t have made a difference in this instance. Again, I apologise that this happened to you and hope that we all exercise vigilance in this country in these trying times.
