Delightful, one bedroom English basement apartment, conveniently situated in the center of DC’s trendiest and most eclectic neighborhoods. Step through the front gate and look over your shoulder to take in the panoramic cityscape and majesty of the Capitol Dome, just two miles away. (Most of the apartment photos were shot by Airbnb, but I renovated in August 2017, to replace wall-to-wall carpeting with wood-plank tile floors throughout. Everything else is the same.)
Located on a quiet residential street with commanding city views, this spacious apartment has private entrances in the front and back of my home and offers one bedroom with full size bed with plush pillows and comforter, separate living room outfitted with quality furniture (e.g. Crate and Barrel, Mitchell Gold), art, and decorations, including a new Ultra HD Smart TV with HD cable and WiFi. Ample natural light shines through windows on three sides. Recessed lights with dimmers, exposed brick, original 108 year old fireplace mantel, wood blinds, central HVAC, and ceramic plank-wood tile flooring gives the apartment a warm, homey feel.
The full-size, fully-equipped kitchen has a glass-top stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, and garbage disposal. The in-unit front loading washer and dryer are located in a separated utility room. Keurig coffee maker, silverware, cutlery, utensils, glasses, wine glasses, plates, pots, and pans are provided just in case you have an urge to cook.
Private, fenced-in backyard patio includes a dining table with 4 chairs, large patio umbrella, and charcoal grill. The grounds to the semi-detached, circa 1909 row house are surrounded by a stone retaining wall with a decorative iron fence that frames the professionally landscaped grounds.
The apartment has a keyless door lock to make your arrival and departure easy. Your key code is provided prior to arrival. I’ll make every effort to be flexible with check-in and check-out procedures but it will depend on whether I have other guests arriving. I have more flexibility with check-out times than check-in.

I live upstairs from the apartment and am available to answer questions and make sure your stay is pleasant. Since there’s no key exchange, guests can determine the level of engagement with me. You have access to the entire apartment and its amenities.
In the event anything should come up, I am just a knock or text away.
The building has two units and I live upstairs from the Airbnb property. The apartment is private and separate from where I live. Each property has dedicated private entrances.
Dogs live in the building but have never lived inside the apartment (i.e. Airbnb property). My dogs do hang out on my porch and lawn.
Ceiling heights in most 109 year old English basement apartments are ~ 6' 8" and typical of the architecture at the time, less where duct work is above the headboard and at the kitchen sink (see pictures).
- Dogs live in the building and you're likely to interact with them on occasion when in the yard. Given that dogs are on the premises, ensure gates are always closed.
- Quiet hours start at 11:00 PM. Unfortunately, I have to get up early for work.
- Arrival plans must be communicated and coordinated within 24 hours prior, preferably as soon as possible.
- Please provide me the first and last names of all guests staying with you, friends who may visit, and that they are aware of the house rules.
I spend much of my off-time walking through the city with my two dogs. Our walks take us to places throughout the city that friends often remark on how far field we go. I’ve come to know the DC very well. I can direct you to hiking trails through Rock Creek Park, architectural sights of Georgetown, historic neighborhood parks, or locations of some opening scenes from “House of Cards.” Sometimes we walk to the White House and Capitol Hill when tourists are in short supply – dogs, leashes, and hundreds of people can be a bit much. I enjoy dining out with friends and can recommend many neighborhood gems that cater to locals and offer an unhurried dining experience of outstanding food and drink. With the hustle and bustle all around, I enjoy quiet time at home and hope you’ll share that enjoyment of quiet time too.
