I am really sorry to hear about your negative experience! I am surprised to hear that you feel the Island Colony is in a "sketchy location." You are right in the heart of Waikiki, within walking distance to the brand new International Market Place, a ton of great restaurants, a gorgeous beach, and lots of shopping! To be perfectly honest, the location is usually one of everyone's favorite things about the Island Colony. We (my husband and I) would have never said to "not go out past a specific time each day;" I think you misunderstood us. You had asked my husband if there were any places to avoid walking in, and he replied that Waikiki is a safe place, but if you're going to be walking late at night to take Seaside Ave. and not Nohonani. The only reason he said to take Seaside Ave. and not Nohonani was because there is a bar on that street which can get rowdy. That bar is actually a small hole in the wall bar that isn't any more dangerous than your average bar. Seaside is just a lot quieter since it's only hotels and condos, so he was just saying if you had the choice to exit out of the front of the building vs. the back of the building, he would suggest going out the main exit (front of the building). Though I feel I should add that I am a petite girl and have had no problems in the past whatsoever if I walk down Seaside or Nohonani even if I am by myself. I have never once felt in danger anywhere in Waikiki actually. I'm so sorry that his words made you feel unsafe.
The photos of the room were just taken (within the last 6 months) and the only furniture we have replaced is a new mattress for the bed--the frame and headboard are the same, just the mattress itself is different. Nothing was staged for the photos and everything (other than the mattress) is exactly the same as pictured.
As far as your comment about communication, I was on the phone directing you guys on how to get to the Island Colony. I mentioned the Enterprise because I told you to turn right into the first driveway after turning left onto Nohonani and you'll see an Enterprise on your righthand side. I said on the phone that I am happy to stay on the phone with you guys and direct you on exactly how to get to the building and that my husband would be waiting downstairs for you to help get you checked in.
I like to think that I go above and beyond to ensure that each and every one of our guests are treated with an utmost level of respect and kindness. In your review you stated that you circled the block for half an hour "trying to find where the building was and where we could park, while trying to call the host for assistance," and you're making it sound as though I wasn't answering or responding to you, but that is completely untrue. I had talked to you when you first got to the airport, and asked if you could call me when you are about 10 minutes away so that we could meet you downstairs. Then you asked about where to park when you first get there so you could unload your luggage easily and that's when I said I could explain over the phone how to get to the free 2 hour parking and to call me when you are getting close; since it'll be easier to do once you are there and can see all of the different street names. When you called me when you were just getting into Waikiki, I walked you through exactly how to get there.
Everything is in our listing in regards to parking and the exact size of the condo. This is a studio unit which may seem on the smaller size, but when you compare it to the average hotel size in Waikiki it is actually a little bigger (when comparing to other hotels built around the same time) and when taking the lanai into consideration it is considerably larger than most studios in Waikiki. I can understand though that it is hard to tell the exact layout and size just from pictures alone. I appreciate this feedback and will add a floor plan of the unit to ensure that future guests can see exactly how the room is set up and have detailed measurements.
All in all, I am deeply sorry that you had such a negative experience. I know all that goes into planning and taking vacations, so to have one not be exactly what you wanted and hoped for is tough. I hope that you were still able to enjoy our beautiful island overall though. We enjoyed hosting you guys and hope to possibly host you again in the future if not at the Island Colony, in one of our other properties on Oahu! Mahalo Nui Loa!
