Catherine's home was very lovely. Although she was not there she took great care that we would be assisted by someone else and she even considered sending us suggestions for restaurants and pubs. We stayed at Zareba with four European girls and we were told that it can be really dangerous in Port Elizabeth. Catherine's home was in a safe neighbourhood and the accommodation was surrounded by walls which made us feel at ease. I would really recommend going here!

Thank you for your review Talitha and positive comments and private feedback. We are in the process of refurbishing the cottage bathroom which will alleviate the problem.

Rooms in the house were arranged and it was not a cottage house on its own.

Thank you for you for your comments. We are busy making some changes to our listings on Airbnb to ensure that guests are aware that the rooms are in the main Guesthouse and the Garden Cottage is a stand alone unit with its own entrance . Apologies for the confusion. However, your group were offered two full Ensuite rooms at no extra cost.

We booked into the Zareba guest house to stay for three nights while visiting family in Port Elizabeth, and to introduce my 8-month-old daughter to her great-grandmother. On arrival at the guest house, we pulled into the garage and noticed that the second half of the driveway was filled with rugs being dried, which we really didn’t think anything of. As we were meeting my mother for lunch, we just wanted to drop our bags off and be on our way but as we got to the cottage, we were greeted by Catherine who was still busy doing up the room and in her own words, “had forgotten we were coming.” While the rooms were much smaller than we thought they were, neither this nor the fact that Catherine still being busy was, as far as we knew, any real reason to be concerned. On returning to the guest house in the evening, to bath our daughter and get her ready for bed, and after taking off our shoes, we discovered that the carpet of the room was soaking wet. Catherine had clearly had the carpets cleaned and had to have known the carpet hadn’t dried properly and yet still did not mention it to us or forewarn us in any way whatsoever. There is every real chance that if we didn’t take our shoes off, we would’ve put our daughter on the floor to play before finding out that it was wet. It was unhygienic not to mention uncomfortable in the extreme. We immediately went to discuss this with Catherine and at all times, were polite and cordial, we could understand if there’d been a mix up or some kind of miscommunication. Catherine offered us alternative accommodation in the guest house but in her own words, “did not think it would be adequate” for us and our baby. So, at 6:30pm, when my daughter should’ve been in the bath and getting ready for bed, we were packing the car in the rain and getting ready to search Port Elizabeth for alternative accommodation. Desperate, we booked into what we could find, which was a far more expensive hotel, and not at all what we’d budgeted for. We understand that mistakes happen. What we don’t understand, is the fact that Catherine has chosen to keep 100% of our payment for the first night. When we asked her to reconsider, she replied: “I'm willing to cancel two nights however as you checked in at 1 pm and notified me after 5 of your intentions to leave. Had I known earlier I could've resold the cottage. Many people were turned away being a particularly busy weekend in Port Elizabeth.” There was no way a room with wet floors should’ve been rented out to absolutely anyone else and anyone who believes that it would be reasonable to rent out a room in that condition, has questionable morals at best. The alternative accommodation that Catherine offered inside the B&B was, in her own words, not...

Wir waren im separaten Appartement im Garten untergebracht. Sehr ruhig. Frühstück war sensationell (für 60 Rand zu haben). Tolle Gespräche mit Gastgeberin abends beim Gläschen Wein ;-)

I'm a sociable person who loves to have her family and friends over for a delicious dinner (pretty good cook) and a good bottle of wine. I like to keep active and am a bit of a yogi, who also often goes for long walks along our beautiful coastline with my two dogs. I try to travel as much I can, and would say that Croatia is a favourite destination of mine. The ice cream is like no other!!

I've been in the guesthouse industry for about 6 years and would consider myself a very laid back host, who likes nothing better than to make her guests feel like they are staying in a home away from home. You're more than welcome to join me on my veranda for a chat and a good old cuppa or a cheeky glass of wine. I really enjoy getting to know each and every one of my guests, and will be so happy to recommend any restaurants or worthwhile things to see or do whilst you stay with me in the exciting city of Port Elizabeth.
