【Theme parks】
(1) Tobu World Square (4 mins Walk) is a theme park in Kinugawa Onsen that exhibits 1/25th scale replicas of famous buildings from around the world. The models include ancient monuments, cultural treasures and UNESCO World Heritage Sites which are reproduced with great detail all the way down to cars, trains and miniature people populating the sites, and with gardens that change with the seasons.

(2) Nikko Edomura (Edo Wonderland)(33mins Walk/2.7km) is a history theme park recreating Japanese town life during the Edo Period ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)). The park is really a small town built in Edo style architecture and populated by townspeople in period costume, and has been used as the setting for period tv dramas. Park guests have the opportunity to dress up as well (costumes can be rented for a fee) and tour the town's historically based shops and museums, participate in games and see live shows and theater.

(3) The Grand Maze Palladium (35mins walk / 2.9km) is a large fence maze located just across the way from Nikko Edomura. To complete this challenging labyrinth you must stamp a card at each of the four towers, one at each corner of the maze, and then find the exit. It takes about 40 minutes to complete on average, and cold drinks are awarded to those that finish in less than 20 minutes. There are no bathrooms or vending machines once inside the maze.

(4) The Kinugawa Line Kudari River Cruise ( 23 mins by walk and train) is a ride down Kinugawa River in flat bottomed, wooden boats. The cruises lasts about 40 minutes and travel through mostly undeveloped stretches of the river, passing rock formations along the way that resemble various animals and objects. Humorous explanations are provided by the boatmen in Japanese. Shoes are removed on board of the boats.

FEES 2700 yen (reservations recommended, includes shuttle bus to Kinugawa Onsen Station)

【UNESCO World Heritage】
Toshogu Shrine (東照宮, Tōshōgū)(40mins by train) is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. Ieyasu is enshrined at Toshogu as the deity Tosho Daigongen, "Great Deity of the East Shining Light". Initially a relatively simple mausoleum, Toshogu was enlarged into the spectacular complex seen today by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu during the first half of the 1600s.
The lavishly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen buildings set in a beautiful forest. Countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf were used to decorate the buildings in a way not seen elsewhere in Japan, where simplicity has been traditionally stressed in shrine architecture. Visitors may note that Toshogu contains both Shinto and Buddhist elements. It was common for places of worship to contain elements of both religions until the Meiji Period when Shinto was deliberately separated from Buddhism. Across the country, Buddhist elements were removed from shrines and vice versa, but at Toshogu the two religions were so intermingled that the separation was not carried out completely.

We had a really great time at Maru's place! The apartment is very close to Tobu World Square and its train station. A little downside is that not many trains stop there, especially in the evening, so plan accordingly. The space is great, wonderful sleeping area, and even a heating table (kotatsu) in the living space!

A good value when looking for a place close to Kinugawa Onsen without having to pay higher accommodation prices there. Maru's place is very pleasant and clean and not far from train.

The apartment was easy to find and get into the unit using the lockbox. Everything was very clean and looked like the photos. The area is very quiet and rural which was nice. It is also located near some areas of interest and has a large parking area a two minute walk away. We had one problem which was that there was no light bulb in the shower room. We got to the unit around 19:00 and I emailed Maru upon realizing that there was no light in the shower. She replied quickly and was very apologetic and said someone would fix it. Unfortunately, due to the later hour, nobody could come that evening and she said someone would be by in the morning. Nobody ever did come by the next morning so we just showered in the dark and tried to make them quick. It wasn't the biggest problem I've encountered while traveling, but was a frustration with the experience.

The place was really nice. I wouldn't hesitate staying here again. The highlight of our stay was biking around the neighborhood while there was a slight drizzle. However, be prepared to walk from the station to the house. Also, I highly recommend bringing food beforehand as there aren't any stores open early or late.

Cute and cozy. Great host that made everything run smoothly. Quiet residential neighborhood but there's still a drinks machine two blocks away. Grocery up the street, restaurants around- lovely. Fast wifi and TV that let me watch the thrilling end of the January sumo tournament. Don't miss Nikkō Tōshō-gū Shrine, which is a short drive or a medium train ride by and one of the most stunning things I've ever seen.

The place was very cute and clean. Having futons and sheets already laid out was very helpful and good to see at the end of a long day. Thanks again!
