Staying at Sandro's place puts you right at the center of all you could wish for in a 'home away from home' ! When I arrived at the train station, Sandro was there to collect me and my 2 suitcases . . . at 8pm on a rainy winter evening. His apartment is about 2km north of Perugia, on a short, no-through-traffic "street" that is just long enough for the apartment building and two houses--and when you look out the windows, you see a low wooded hill, and hear a happy chorus of birds--not road noise ! There's a little grocery store you can walk to in about 7 minutes--say 'Hi" for me to Raffaella, Alessio, Vittorio and Lise--they became my cheering squad, my telephone experts, and my friends ! On the way to the grocery store, you'll pass the bus stop--the bus runs into and out of Perugia every hour from 6am to 8pm (Monday-Saturday) --and if you are early enough, you can talk to the students who travel into Perugia each day for classes ! (I loved walking up the long hill into Perugia--there was not a lot of traffic [it was winter], and the drivers were always courteous.) And from the bus station you can go on day trips to Assisi, Gubbio, (say "Hi" to Leo Grilli for me--he's a ceramics guy who once won a bet using a car's wheel as his ceramics wheel !) And from the train station you can get to Firenze, Terni, Spello, Spoleto . . . for day trips ! Inside the apartment were all the amenities--even a bidet ! (Explanations on-line for using one, if you never have ! They're great !) And since I arrived so late in the evening, Sandro had a few happy surprises for me in the fridge ! I must say, it was sort of like "playing house" to stay at his place ! And wait till you use the tiny Whirlpool washing machine that gets things . . . really clean ! (Wish I had one here at home !) And when I called to tell him that it wasn't working properly--he had someone come to the apartment within the hour ! (It was a broken belt--and was fixed in a jiffy !) But I think the best part of Sandro's place is . . . Sandro ! He made sure things were running smoothly-- with a text every few days to check in with me. And if I were up (I really enjoyed waking up to hear the birds (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)ing away, and then falling asleep again--what a luxury), anyway, if I were up and wanted a lift into town, he would stop by and pick me up for a whirlwind passage into town. He and I went together to check meter readings (gas, water and methane) on my first day there, midway through my stay, and the last day of my 3 months in Perugia--it was a great relief to 'see for myself'...
