This is an old house and there's not a straight door, wall or window in the whole place but its light, bright and comfortable with great views We've furnished our "Little Crooked House" with care and for comfort and we hope you love it as much as we do! ❤
This is a great place to enjoy and explore the Northeast Kingdom year round. Easy to find just outside of the village of Barton, south on Route 5 and about a mile from the I91 (exit 25) We have tried to be environmentally and socially responsible in making our "Little Crooked House" a home; trying to re-use, recycle, up-cycle and repurpose wherever possible. We try to avoid "big box" stores and play our part in supporting the area's micro-economy by buying local and using local services and trades people.
USEFUL AND INTERESTING STUFF
The property is elevated from the road and accessed from a driveway shared by our neighbor. There is enough space to comfortably park two to three vehicles dependant on the size of vehicle (although we've found that parking a large vehicle dirctly in line with the kitchen window interferes with the Wifi signal; (a quirk of our little crooked house, I'm afraid!) Once on the driveway access to the house is fairly level and should be pretty wheel friendly for wheelchairs and buggies etc with all amenities on the ground floor. Please ask before booking if you have any concerns about this.
The house was built around 1875, not much more than a century after the famous Roger's Rangers found refuge and sustinance on the banks of Crystal Lake. Like it's setting, some of the fixtures in the house seem to be out of a history book and some are more "shabby" than "chic", but we love it the way it is! ❤
The kitchen has a gas stove, refrigerator, kettle, coffee maker, toaster and most of the pots, pans and dishes you should need (however please note, there's no microwave)
Two of the bedrooms are off the living room, one facing the lake and one facing the wooded rear of the house. There are two further bedrooms on the first floor that are available on request.
The living room overlooks the lake and has a sofa and two comfortable armchairs to relax in. I'm sure you'll have lots more interesting things to do than watch TV but there's a flat screen with Netflix & Hulu etc and a dvd player should you wish to use them. TV comes via the Internet and whilst reception is generally good, weather conditions can sometimes disrupt the signal so worth considering bringing your own favourite dvds in case of rainy days! We have a small collection also (hidden away in the ottoman trunk) but they may not be to your individual taste.
There are mountain bikes, fishing rods and golf clubs available; please let us know if you would like to use them.
You'll have access to up to four double bedrooms (two on the ground floor, two on the first floor), dependant on the number of guests in your party; a living room, kitchen and 2 bathrooms (shower, toilet and hand basin), one on each floor. Nightly rate assumes up to two guests sharing a bedroom. Additional per guest rate assumes up to two guests will share a bedroom. Please ask if you need additional bedrooms for single occupancy.
The ground floor bathroom (off the kitchen) is basic but functional and convenient; there is another more modern bathroom and laundry room upstairs, which guests are welcome to use. There is also a large space that we use as a drying room if you need to dry off kit or outdoor coats etc.
There is a large deck to the side of the house overlooking the lake which has a dining table, chairs and parasol set out during the warmer months, plus there are three "zero gravity" recliners available for guests to use. In addition under the small covered porch at the front of the house there is a small cafe table and chairs set out all year round.

Our great neighbour Collern will take care of you during your stay. She is a truely caring individual and really thinks about what she can do to assist or help make your visit more enjoyable. Colleen is also a trained masseuse, certified to practice Hawaiian and Shiatsu massage techniques. If guests would like to include a therapeutic massage during their stay, they can arrange an appointment in advance or directly with Colleen on arrival
Whilst the view of Crystal Lake is very special, you should note that a road runs between the house and the lake front and we do not have our own direct access onto the lake. Crystal Lake can be accessed from the State Park or Town Beach
The St Johnsbury to Newport railroad runs along the lake shore at this end of the lake. The line doesn't carry passenger trains any longer but there are a handful of freight trains throughout the day; they're fun to watch coming through and if you see one don't forget to wave at the driver and you might be rewarded with a toot from his air horn! They're more "Casey Jones than Amtrak!"
- This is a relaxed living home and we want guests to feel at ease. Smoking is not permitted indoors (does anyone smoke indoors anymore?) but please feel free to do so on the deck but please dispose of your cigarette ends respectfully. Whilst families with babies are welcome you will need your own highchair and cribs etc. Pets unfortunately can't be accommodated as so many people suffer with allergies these days.
We would be grateful if guests removed their garbage when leaving, thank you
