Welcome to Butterfly Farm Sanctuary, a small spiritual retreat center for people committed to their own inner transformation. Nestled on 22 acres along a river in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina near Asheville, NC, we offer a vegetarian-only refuge for people looking to rest, reflect, re-energize, heal, create, vision, dream, or any combination of the above. We are especially interested in hosting people involved in work that is changing the planet.
If you see yourself as a person committed to bringing about positive change in the world and find that you need some time to yourself, for whatever reason, then we would love to host you. We offer 22 acres of beautiful mountain land bordered by a crystal clear river, a dynamic creek and thousands of acres of state and national forest.
The space you will be occupying is called EarthSeed. It is situated right beside the creek where days and nights can be spent listening to it flow melodiously past you. You will be staying in a large, beautiful tent that can be used throughout the year (yep, there is heat inside which can keep the tent about 50 degrees). Measuring 13' in diameter and more than 12' tall at the highest peak, EarthSeed features a queen-size bed, chairs, small tables, plenty of lighting and space to store your gear. It is a perfect place to rest and let the sound of the water rejuvenate your heart.
EarthSeed sits upon a large deck. There is a back door to the tent that leads to a 6' X 8' rear outside deck where you can sit for hours beside the creek and enjoy watching nature, meditating, listening within or other nourishing activities. The back deck is quite private. EarthSeed was named one of the top 11 Glamping sites in North Carolina and featured first in the article.
Across from the tent is a large picnic shelter which features, a refrigerator for storing your food, an old-timey fireplace to take any chill off and a new grill for cooking all of your meals. All cooking is strictly vegetarian and we request you go easy on garlic and onions so the next guests might be able to appreciate the space as well. Remember in the late seasons of the year, you will be cooking in the open air of the mountains!
Finally, there is a beautifully appointed full bath available just a minute's walk from EarthSeed and the picnic shelter. This full bath offers a beautiful setting, including a walk-in shower with river stones serving as the shower floor.
Please note that while we are continuing to build out the sanctuary, the bathroom may be shared with one to two other guests if our other space is rented (see our other listing: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/14135971). Just ask, if you wish to know whether other guests will be there. We ask that as a guest you acknowledge the need for other's privacy and act quietly so as not to interrupt reflections and rest that may be occurring.
Also, no pets, please.
There is plenty of parking and easy access to EarthSeed.
You will also have access to more than 1,000 feet of riverfront just by walking back down the main entrance drive. The water is very clean and originates just 10 miles up in the Smoky Mountains near the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is an incredible spot for communing with yourself, writing, or watching nature as it unfolds along the river.
With pre-arranged permission, there is also available, a medicine wheel, a walking path around the property and daytime access to Celesterra, a beautiful treehouse situated on the property. Many an hour has been passed in its loving embrace, reading, writing, meditating. Celesterra is available for an additional fee.
We also encourage working with the land while on your retreat. If you feel so inclined, we can discuss the possibility of working with us on the many projects we have in motion.
Butterfly Farm is accessed by crossing a 1920's steel truss bridge. We love this bridge for it signifies a time to let go of the jet stream you are in and simplify your time here with the land. The Sanctuary is surrounded by more than 4,000 acres of state and national forest, great for longer hikes up the mountain.
Just up the road about ten miles is the Blue Ridge Parkway with extensive views of the Smoky Mountain range. Also nearby are miles and miles of national and state-maintained trails (a short 10 to 15-minute drive). The road from which you turn onto the property is a designated scenic highway and many bicyclists are seen cruising along the road. A mile back toward Waynesville is the Lake Logan Episcopal Retreat center, which affords beautiful views of the lake. There are also many available spots on the property for contemplation.
