Croatia-particularly 'off the beaten track Croatia' is perfection. Polače was super. Not you cannot get to Mljet from Zadar directly! We had to miss a stay in Polače and add a day in Split because of this. We got to the island via the Krilo catamaran- a lovely journey from Split in itself. There are taxis waiting at the ferry that docks in Pomena-we jumped into the first one we could find. It was 40kn pp which we were probably a bit ripped off with hindsight but we just wanted to secure a journey to Polače. It's a short journey and Jelena told us its walkable with with a backpack in the midday sun, even for an athletic couple like us was a bit mental to venture.... glad we got a taxi. Polace is a village with literally a row of buildings. About 8 restauraunts-mostly all open breakfast to dinner and mostly of good quality but very expensive even by Dublin standards! They cater for sailing boats and posh yachts mainly that dock in the evening time in the bay. The bay is quiet and it's wonderful seeing the various boats. There is also a supermarket and a bakery and plenty of bike rental places. I would recommend: Taking a walk to the highest point of the island-difficult for the lungs and legs but terrain is ok with uninterrupted views to the horizon. Can walk from there to the lakes. Took another day at the lakes but walked the normal way-about 2.5k and an easy walk. Hiring bikes around the lakes was a good idea. If heading from Mljet to Dubrovnik-book the Krilo catamaran early as there was no space for us and had to go from a port 30 km and an expensive taxi journey away instead. We chose Polače because we were under the impression Pomena would be touristy and busy. Wasn't the case really by all accounts and were pleasantly surprised by how non-busy Polače was during last week of July-early August. Hiring a kayak to find lonely swimming spots is a must-packing a backpack for water suncream and rolls with ham and cheese!!! Best decision we made was to hire a 5hp boat to explore and go further afield. The swimming spot we found... omg. Wow. The apartments was exactly what we wanted-a place to shower and sleep. The shower was of great power, the shower mat was grotty so that was removed. The bed was very comfortable. Had to give the room a light dusting but overall was clean. Never met Jelena but Marko was very pleasant and smiley. The view from the shared, but quiet balcony was amazing. The sections sectioned off by pots of basil. There was a communal kitchen and communal kettle which we didn't use but the room was separate and private. I think it's typical of what you get in Polače. No AC though. The heat was hot....! This was just about overcomable with the fan in the room and...

The bedroom and the bathroom were clean but very small. Actually it was ok because we had a big terrasse just in front of the room with a beautiful view of the port. We had our breakfast there. But there is nothing to be able to cook or to have a coffee and we had to ask for plates and hot water. When we came back from the park in the evening, we had a shower but we didn't have hot water, nor our neighbors. We didn't see Jelena, we were welcomed by Marko who's doesn't speak English (but he's really nice!). We had some problems to go to Mljet... We couldn't buy boat tickets online and when we went to the shop 3 days before, all the boats were sold out. We found another way to go to the island arriving in another city. Jelena told us there was a bus to go to Polace but there wasn't... No bus nor boat. We had to ask to someone to drive us by car. So, when we had these problems we contacted Jelena who answered late (so we always figured out solution by our own). In conclusion, the place is cool but too much expansive for what it is.

I'm almost 30 years old and I love my amazing little town, sea, good food and great coffee.

I'm running reservations for my property and my friends as well and feel free to ask me what ever you want to know about Dubrovnik and county :)
