After some initial hiccups about what could be used and not used in the kitchen, it was mostly smooth sailing. The house is located approx 6 km from the main town center of Virac. Inside the house there is Zero Internet Access even from OTA providers like Smart and Globe.
The stairs are typical for the Philippines but not for the rest of the world, aggressively steep, 1 stair instead of 2 at 45 degree angle, so if you have mobility problems as I did, usually you decided to stay upstairs all day or downstairs all day.
The air-conditioned room is great, but the house could do with an air-conditioner in the downstairs as well. Watch out for the hidden electricity costs, at around P233 per day. Also the adjoining house shares the same power and you cannot ascertain their power usage, so you might be paying their bills.
If you like sitting on solid wood furniture like in your school days this is perfect, there is not a cushioned chair in sight.
The TV worked, sort of, picture with no sound. No USB input, no HDMI, I managed to rig a PC input and used external speakers that I provided. The lack of USB and HDMI is not directly the hosts fault it is an old TV, the fact there is no sound, that is an issue, so don't plan on watching TV.
Virac must have some of the worst electrical power in the entire Philippines. I doubt there was a day when the power did not go out, the house has no solar backup, and the emergency lights in the house provide lighting for the sitting room only. We had to provide our own candles during power outages.
The house is in actual fact nowhere near the airport, it is 3-4 km from the airport and access by tricycle unless you are accustomed to tricycle is harrowing. You cannot rent a self drive car on the island. I doubt you can rent motorcycles either. If you rent a van for the day expect to pay $100 - 150 per day for a van or private car plus driver and fuel separate.
Access to the house, which is sort of on the circumferential road, is by hidden lane-way. There is no direct road access to the house, getting a tricycle at any hour except daylight is next to impossible, and as the house is so far out, if you do find a tricycle in town, you have to pay him triple rates to take you home. The house would be great for a weekend stay or maybe a week. But it is too far from town for any longer duration.
