Located on a lovely tree-lined canal in a peaceful and convenient neighborhood --one of Kyoto's nicest-- the entire city is within easy reach of this 2+ bedroom house. Have a day visiting around the city, then return to the tranquility of a real local neighborhood. Here the nights are quiet and still. In the morning you'll hear the sound of passing footsteps and bicycles as kids are off to school, neighbors sweep the streets or chat on their morning strolls. It's a peaceful place to begin the day.
Elegant and uncluttered Japanese-style bedrooms upstairs have lots of natural light and air, and views along the canal and across the neighborhood. The kitchen is ready for use. We provide coffee, tea and juice, and with an excellent bakery located just around the corner (and other groceries nearby), a nice breakfast is easily prepared. There is a washing machine for clothes and a Japanese style bath. Several public baths are within walking distance.
We live very nearby and can assist with basic city orientation. If you're interested in this house, don't hesitate to contact us with questions!
The neighborhood is one of Kyoto's nicest, and many Japanese people come to walk along the canal, which has cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, maple leaves in fall, and pleasant strolling all year round.
A 10-15 minute cycle from the house will take you to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The nicest section of the Kamo River and the botanical garden are ten minute’s walk away. The amazing gardens of Daitoku-ji, the center of Zen Buddhism, are 15 minutes away by bicycle or bus. Kinkaku-ji, the famous "Golden Pavilion", is 20 minutes by bus. The Silver Pavilion, Ginkaku-ji, is 20 minutes by bus (the same as from downtown).
The house is well-positioned for everyday life. There are several excellent food markets within easy walking distance, many traditional and utilitarian shops, and a number of excellent local restaurants.
There are two local sento (public baths) within walking distance.
You have full access to the house, which will be your private home while in Kyoto!

We live very nearby and will welcome you to our house and assist you with orientation and other helpful information. Our kids won't bother you but they also like to meet and chat with visitors, especially other kids!
This house is located in a residential neighborhood. It is quiet and peaceful on most days and nights. Many local people have lived here for decades, and they will notice you as a visitor. We ask all our guests to be respectful of our neighbors, to greet them when it seems natural, and, especially at night, to remember that they are nearby and loud noises carry easily.
We ask our guests to be considerate of our neighbors by not making too much noise in the evenings. We are happy to answer or help with any questions you have while you're here. Just ask us!

I am a geographer and travel mostly for work.
I live and work in Kyoto, Japan, a place where I also sometimes (often!) feel like a traveller, though I have been here for several years.
As a traveller I look for a simple place to stay where I can relax and also experience something of the everyday life of the areas I am so lucky to visit.
As hosts my family has received many people from around the world. We are always happy to welcome you to Japan and help you to enjoy this amazing city.
