Pego do Linho is a 7 hectare, completely secluded, off-grid estate in the stunning Alentejo countryside. Surrounded on 3 sides by a river, this nature lover & birdwatcher's paradise is the ideal place to relax and explore. The guest house is totally private, with its own entrance, sunny verandah & panoramic views. Conveniently located on the road between Lisbon (1:40 mins) and Faro (1:06 mins) and close to Ourique (10 mins) with its supermarket & many cafes and restaurants.
You will find complete peace on our beautiful estate in the heart of the Alentejo countryside. The land consists of natural areas surrounded by a river where you can swim, walk, picnic or just sit quietly. All the seasons are different - in spring time enjoy the meadows and river banks full of amazing wildflowers, in summer, the hot days and in winter the bright blue skies and crisp mornings. Olive groves, a fruit orchard and fields full of aromatic plants provide a haven for many bird species. You can sit and read under the shade of the large holm oaks or walk around and enjoy the incredible scenery. At night time the sky fills with brilliant stars and you are free to borrow our telescope to view them more closely. In the river you will see fish, freshwater turtles and evidence of otters (or maybe, if you are very lucky, you will see an otter).
The open-plan guest house has complete privacy with its own entrance and verandah, a well equipped kitchen with a washing machine and a bathroom with both shower and bath. The large living area is kept warm in the winter by a wood-burning pellet stove and in the summer, the gentle breezes keep the interior cool. From the verandah you have panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
During your stay you can simply relax or you can explore the area around us, perhaps take a trip to the west coast beaches, have a swim in the dams of Monte de Rocha or Santa Clara or visit some of the picturesque and historical towns in the area. Only 15 minutes away is the famous Special Protection Area of Castro Verde where numerous species of birds can be found. (Here are just a few! White Stork, Eurasian Griffon Vulture, Eurasian Black Vulture, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Red Kite, Montagu’s Harrier, Hen Harrier, Booted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Merlin, Common Crane, Great Bustrad, Little Bustard, Stone Curlew, Black–winged Stilt, Collared Pratincole, Eurasian Golden Plover, Northern Lapwing, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Great Spotted Cuckoo, European Bee-eater, Eurasian Hoopoe, European Roller, Common Kingfisher, Calandra Lark, Thekla Lark, Red-rumped Swallow, Common Nightingale, Rufous Bush Robin, Black-eared Wheatear, Melodious Warbler, Southern Grey Shrike, Woodchat Shrike, Azure-winged Magpie, Common Raven and Spanish Sparrow.)

Our house is close by and we are happy to help you with whatever you need. Or you can be by yourselves, the choice is entirely yours.
We have experience in leading birdwatching, hiking and stargazing tours and although we do not offer formal tours, we will be happy to share our experience with you.
Please note that our water is supplied by borehole and our electricity by solar. It is very important that we use these resources carefully. Please understand that sometimes, on dull days, we cannot use appliances such as washing machines and that sometimes we may have to switch on the generator (which is noisy).
The plumbing can be a little sensitive so we ask you to be careful about what you flush away.
We have a rooster who may wake you up in the most countryside way!
Our dogs are very friendly, but if you do not feel comfortable around dogs, this is not the right place for you!

I lived on Sal for eight years, originally I came to make a wildlife film, but ended up starting a charity called Turtle SOS which protects the nesting turtles. I can give you lots of ideas if you are interested in a nature based holiday or need information about water sports. I can also advise you about other islands as I have visited them all and even updated the Bradt Guide to Cape Verde.
I now live in Portugal with my partner and four dogs on a seven hectare estate near Ourique. If you love nature as we do, we would love to share our piece of rural Alentejo paradise with you.
