Welcome to The Refuge...
Casita La Paz is a cozy space for those who are okay with rural life (i.e. bugs and dust; see "Other things to note" below) and a short walk to the house for bathroom and kitchen facilities. it has a super plush double bed with 100% organic cotton linens; wine glasses, organic tea bags, cups and an electric kettle; a private entrance and outdoor "hang out" area; handy parking; natural light; A/C; a drawer for your things; and great books to read.
if you are expecting an insect-free, pristine space, you may want to consider another place. we live on a farm in a community setting (we share our home with housemates who help with the gardens and other Refuge projects) where we often have community events, so it's not always perfectly clean- but it is full of love and warmth!
CHILDREN: if you have children, snuggly families of 3-4 can share the bed or put a small crib or mattress nearby. (again, please note: there is no bathroom in the Casita; all bathrooms are located in the main house.) PLEASE INQUIRE, as we love children and would like to be able to accommodate you. we just request an additional $10/person for parties with more than two adult guests.
ANIMAL GUESTS: we welcome animal guests on a case-by-case basis. PLEASE INQUIRE about the possibility of having your pets stay in the Casita, and note that we kindly request a $20 donation for the extra cleaning required after you leave. we kindly request that you do not leave your pets in the Casita for more than 1-2 hours MAXIMUM for their comfort and safety. we will request a refundable security deposit if you intend to leave them (in case they damage the Casita in any way). thank you for understanding.
PLEASE enter our house through the front door (the sidewalk to the left of The Temple leads you there), as we reserve The Temple entrance for events and classes only. also, to keep our home as clean as possible, we ask that everyone remove their shoes when they enter the house or Temple. thank you!
we do leave a light on in the living room at night, so you can find your way around if you arrive late :-)
as Casita guests, you have access to:
•the kitchen- feel free to store your food in the refrigerator (other than the “private” residents' shelves) and use our kitchen supplies. if you wish to cook, PLEASE CLEAN UP after you're done. please note: if you have more than 1-2 in your party, we kindly request a $5-10 DONATION per person toward the cost of food (there is a jar in the kitchen). thank you!
•again, PLEASE NOTE that the guest bathrooms are in the main house - a short walk from the Casita. there is a 1/2 bath off of the kitchen through the laundry room; the full bath with the shower is down the hallway past the living room.
•the common space (kitchen and living room)- feel free to share our common spaces with us, our housemate Ainslie (also our airbnb co-host) and other friends and family (we love visitors!), use our wifi (sometimes accessible in the Casita), read, have a cup of tea or just hang out in the kitchen or living room. we like to share our space.
•you are more than welcome to enjoy our Temple for yoga, meditation, dancing or just hanging out any time it's not being used for classes (Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings/evenings) or other community events (see our "book of faces" page, therefugejamestown).
•washer and dryer. we also have a clothesline out back if you wish to use that- we prefer it ourselves (and it saves energy!).
•we have a wonderful "lending library" available to our guests to use in the Casita... please feel free to peruse the bookshelf in our living room. it has a wide selection of reading materials and dvd's for you to enjoy!
•yoga mats, blankets and foam roller in The Temple; please return items you use where you found them before you leave. thank you!
•a wonderful yoga teacher in our community is available for private lessons for guests at our Casita. if you are interested, please let us know and we will connect you with her so you can schedule your appointment.

all of us residents at The Refuge totally get the importance of our guests' "down time" and value our quiet time, too. so, we are more than happy to give you your space to "just be" and explore on your own. we are also sometimes available to hang out with our guests when we are around.
please note: erin often works from home, so she's usually not "visible" during the days. however, she and Ainslie are available to support you during your stay- feel free to message erin if you need anything. if we aren't here when you arrive, please make yourselves at home and feel free to message erin with any questions. jakob is a local holistic doctor and is home in the evenings. Mondays and Tuesdays are erin's "creative days" (which just means that she won't be available as much in person during the day).
please do message us about any of your needs or questions... we;re happy to help and will respond quickly. thank you!
also, we often host events here, too, which you are more than welcome to join! see our "experiences" here on airbnb and our "book of faces" page (therefugejamestown) for event info.
we are deeply committed to living as light on the earth as possible, so here are some things to know about The Refuge:
•our home is operated on SOLAR POWER, so we AIR DRY LAUNDRY as much as we can (the towels may be a bit stiff, but very absorbent!)
•we are working toward being a ZERO-WASTE / NO PLASTICS home (of course, knowing that you are traveling, we understand if you generate a bit of trash). although we take care of all cleaning duties, if you wish to empty the Casita wastebasket, please do so in the bins next to the Temple (please follow instructions for what goes where). thank you!
•we do a lot of COMPOSTING. PLEASE DO NOT put food in the trash basket inside the Casita. instead, please use the "Casita Compost" bucket provided on the left side of the Casita. this helps keep food waste out of the landfill and ants out of the Casita! :-)
•we are working on adding other sustainable homestead features as we grow, such as a solar dehydrator, root cellar and over 3 dozen trees in our orchard.
it's a creative endeavor and a lot of fun. we are always happy to share our philosophy and very much enjoy rich conversations about these things and more with our guests.
some notes on Country Living... due to the rustic nature of living in the country, here are a few things to remember:
•our driveway is not paved, so during the dry season, please drive slowly to reduce dust. so, although we clean the Casita after every stay, it can sometimes get a little dusty in there.
•winters can get pretty chilly up here... we have a heater, extra blankets and comforter in the Casita to keep you cozy and warm. if you need more blankets, please let us know
•summers can get very hot (100+), so we do our best to keep the Casita cool for your arrival with the air conditioner. we are also committed to using as little energy as possible, so we ask that you please open the window at night and turn off the AC unit during the day when you are not here.
•although we try to keep the Casita insect and spider-free, there may be an occasional "extra guest" in there. summer is mosquito, gnat and fly season, just so you know. if you are averse to sharing the space with INSECTS and/or SPIDERS, please let us know and we'll make sure to do an extra inspection to try to remove any before you arrive... and know that we may not be able to get every one of them, so be prepared to share. thanks for understanding!
•lastly, because we are a working farm, garden soil can make its way into our house, but our home is otherwise clean and welcoming.
we have three resident cats- Buster (the old guy with the short tail and bobcat ears), Tux (Ainslie's black and white sweetie) and Chirp (our mostly outdoor cat). they are very friendly (Buster may scratch on the Casita door from time to time), but they will give you your space if you ask them politely… after all, they’re cats. :-)
p.s. please let us know how you think we can improve. we appreciate your feedback and do our best to incorporate it whenever possible. thank you for helping us grow!
p.p.s. if you ever need to reach airbnb by phone, their numbers are available in the photos section of our listing.
- our agreements (we don't like the word "rules") are pretty straightforward:
•no drugs or underage drinking.
•pets are sometimes welcome in the Casita with permission- please inquire!
•we prefer that you don’t smoke; but if you do, please note that it is allowed ONLY on the patio in front of The Temple (we live in an area of extreme fire danger).
•feel free to visit the chickens, but please don’t try to pet or pick them up and always close all gates and doors behind you if you do (we don’t want any runaway animals!). •please remove your shoes when entering any of our indoor spaces… thank you!
our sustainability requests are here to support our commitment to our planet and its’ inhabitants: •please turn off lights when not in use, unless you need to leave the outside lights on at the Casita if you go out for the evening. •please do your best not to leave plastic throw-away items in our trash baskets or outside bins (we are working towards a plastic-free environment here at The Refuge). •please use water minimally (although we are on a well, we try to practice conservation as much as possible). •feel free to use the kitchen and Temple in the Main House, but please note that the rooms in the hallway are for our private use (except for the hallway bathroom). •please park in the designated spot to the right of the Casita. we request that you save the spaces in our lower parking areas for attendees at our community events. thank you.
