Our little home near downtown Abilene is a place of hospitality and gathering for many. We invite you to join us for good conversation and a peaceful place to spend an evening!
We are excited to have you join us in our home! We live just north of downtown Abilene; a ten to fifteen-minute walk or a short drive will get you to several good restaurants, a coffee shop, and some art exhibits and museums.
As is the case in many cities across the country, the center of Abilene is surrounded by a ring of lower-income neighborhoods, and this is where we have chosen to make our home for the past four years. Our neighborhood is not much to look at, but it is full of goodness, individuals and families that we consider friends and even family. If you are looking for high-society, our place is not for you. But if you appreciate seeing people sitting on their front porch in the evening, enjoying the breeze, lively conversation, and a game of dominoes, then you would probably like where we live!
Like our neighborhood, our home is warm and welcoming, though well-worn. Our house was built in the early 1920s, and the wonderful little old man that we purchased it from had lived there for over fifty years. As he grew older, he became more and more unable to keep up with maintenance, and so we are slowly renovating the space as we have time and attention available to us. The house has two bedrooms (each with a window A/C unit) and one bathroom. The primary guest room includes a full sized bed, a crib and rocking chair, plus there's also a pull-out couch bed in the adjoining living room. The master bedroom is also available if you've chosen to rent the entire house, and it has a queen sized bed.
Though we wouldn't describe it as luxurious (given the updates we're still wanting to do), our home is a functional and enjoyable place to stay. You may use the kitchen freely, as long as you're courteous enough to clean up afterwards. Or we'd gladly share a meal with you depending on how our schedules might overlap.
We have no TV, a plus if you're looking for a simple, restful place to unplug. Instead you'll find good food, good conversation, the chance to play with a very friendly dog and some adorable ducks, as well as peruse (and at least during the summer, eat from!) our ever-growing garden. We do have a loving dog, Sydney, who might eagerly lick you to show you how much she wants to be your best friend. She spends most of her time in the backyard, but she does generally sleep inside.
Make yourself at home in the house, on the porch, and in the yards.
We have one son, born in May of 2015, and our home reflects that fact. There are plenty of children's toys around, there's a crib and rocking chair, and we've got a high chair. If you're traveling with kids, you're welcome to use these things.
We ask simply that you show respect for our home and our lives. If you're willing to do that, most everything else is negotiable!
Rosten & Laura are eager hosts and guests. They own a small home in Abilene, Texas, the town they first met in when working on graduate degrees in ministry. Rosten currently works managing some rental properties they own, and Laura's teaches theology at local Christian university. They have one son, born in May 2015, and another kiddo due to arrive in September 2017. They're working on their home, growing a garden, taking care of their lovely dog and ducks, and enjoying life and community with their house church and whomever else God brings their way!
