My husband and I stayed at Martha’s place the weekend of 8/26-8/29. A couple of things. The listing is not very clear, as another reviewer already mentioned. It requires a bit of investigative work to determine what you are actually renting. It is confusing primarily because the same photo of the house is used for both of Martha’s listings. She has 2 listings at one address, Martha’s Fire Island Get Away is for an attic apartment, the other named Fun with Friends on Fire Island is for half of the first floor. We ended up renting the attic… The pictures did depict it appropriately but there is a difference between seeing a photo and living in the space. Like most attics, the ceiling is slanted. My husband is 6’1 and I am 5’8, so this was uncomfortable and awkward. At first it was tolerable, but by the 5th time you hit your head on the ceiling/wall? No longer funny. The bathroom ceiling is also slanted, so imagine that scene. The small bathroom has a toilet and sink, it was near impossible to even use the sink because how long can you remain in a hunched position? The only shower is an outdoor shower, which is fine, but you will share it with other renters.
The postives : Martha was very easy to book with and communicate with. The A/C unit was barely working and as you might imagine an attic on a 90 degree day is an inferno. She was able to get us a portable A/C unit, we helped her get it upstairs and once installed, it worked perfectly. She was easy going with regard to check in and check out. Despite the cramped space, overall it was neat and clean, with no bugs and no smells. There is a small table with 2 chairs just outside the door that was very helpful to us. We also had quiet, respectful neighbors renting below us and the weather was beautiful, absolutely gorgeous. I have to be honest if there was rain or inclement weather, we would not have been able to stay here. As one other guest noted, it is a very basic space and was best described by another reviewer as a “place to crash.” That is truly what it is. BUT the location was terrific!!! Could not have been better, perfectly located between the ferry/food and the beach. This is Fire Island after all, not a resort, so keep that in mind as you book.
