We have two private rooms and a loft available in our cozy Vermont house. Our home is nestled in the rolling forested hills of central Vermont and is close to art and culture in Hanover, NH.

Our house is located in a remote area in the town of Strafford, Vermont and features fields of wildflowers, a tipi uphill from the house, beautiful perennial gardens, and a flourishing organic vegetable garden.

We are off the beaten path but have easy access to all that the mountains of eastern Vermont have to offer. We are close to the Hanover/Norwich/White River area and there are numerous places to hike, fish, swim, mountain bike and kayak nearby.

Our town has a beautiful historic town house to be explored and there is a gorgeous waterfall 3 miles away from our home.

Strafford is home to the historic Justin Morrill Homestead which offers tours of the buildings and gardens.

A car is a necessity as much of Vermont and nearby New Hampshire are rural with very little or no public transportation. Driving times from Boston: 2.5 hours, NYC: 5 hours and 3.5 hours to Montreal.

The Stone Soup restaurant is located in Strafford and offers gourmet cuisine in an old blacksmith shop and is open Thursday to to Sunday evenings with reservations and of note: does not accept credit cards but is well worth this minor inconvenience.
There are numerous restaurant choices in the greater Hanover/White River area. There are also restaurants available in South Royalton.
The only store in Strafford that sells groceries is located 7 miles away, Coburn's General Store and is open daily until 6:30pm except Sunday when it closes at 1pm. Guests sometimes find that when they reach our location that they are not anxious to drive to eat, and so please plan ahead with groceries as desired. Our refrigerator has limited space, and we do offer a cooler with ice packs for your use.

We have a friendly cat that lives at the house, and many hummingbirds and other wild birds.

A walk from the house leads you to a "walk in the woods" that meanders on a loop through beautiful hardwoods with chairs to rest or read a book or meditate in while listening to the babbling brook. It is short and flat and crosses the brook in three places and is a wonderful place to stop and reflect.

There is Internet and wifi available, but no television and cell service is poor to non existent. We do have a landline available for domestic calls.

We look forward to having you in our home!

Dostupno gostima

Guests are welcome to use any of the two upstairs bedrooms or loft area. Guests will have a private bathroom with a shower, keeping in mind that there may be guests renting the tipi and sharing the shower.

Guests are welcome to use the kitchen if you prefer to cook your own meals. There is limited space in the refrigerator, so bringing a cooler would be recommended.

There are gas grills that you are welcome to use. One of them is designated for meat use. We are vegetarians and prefer that you take all meat waste and packaging with you when you leave and clean the grill after using.

Ostale napomene

Smoking is not permitted anywhere on our land or house. LGBTQ friendly.
Our address is 148 Van Dyke Rd, Strafford, VT 05072.
Please save directions to your phone so that you will have continuous access to directions, as cell service is limited to non existent in much of the town. Here are written directions that you may find useful:

If you are coming on I-89, take Exit 2 (Sharon) and head towards Strafford, which is about 6 miles over the mountain.
At the stop sign turn left.
*Go approximately 2 miles into Strafford Village and take the right hand fork at the town green and travel towards Old City Falls Road, your next right.

Turn RIGHT onto OLD CITY FALLS ROAD and go 2.5 miles to VAN DYKE ROAD (the next left after KENDALL ROAD).

Turn LEFT ONTO VAN DYKE ROAD and go 1.5 miles. The road will wind and get smaller but just keep going and after a big field with a white farmhouse and barn it is ½ mile further ON THE RIGHT. Our mailbox with “ONOFRIO CHUTE” is across from our driveway.

If you are coming from Norwich/Hanover just basically go straight the whole way from Dan and Whit’s, turning left at the triangle/stop sign in the road at Union Village and eventually you will come into South Strafford and will pass by Coburn’s General Store on your right. Continue on to the Stop Sign across from Barrett Memorial Hall (at the jct with Route 132) and then follow directions from the * above.

Cell phones don’t work anywhere around Strafford unless you have wifi calling. If you get lost, just ask where we live, as pretty much everyone knows.

Anita and Mark are an extremely nice couple that's dedicated to their guests. My friends and I had a wonderful stay at Anita's and would definitely go back. I was happy with the communication about the small details before the trip, and the precise directions to get to the place. Once we got there, they made sure we were well acquainted with the place before leaving us to ourselves. The surroundings are rustic and pristine and I'd recommend guests to keep some time to walk around the neighborhood. The only minor complaint I had was that the shower is small and doesn't have enough pressure. Everything else, including their super cute cat Ozzy were a treat.

For me, staying with Anita and Mark represents the best of what the Airbnb experience can offer. A customized guest experience tailored to the tastes of the guest. Their homestead is rustic but beautiful. Every inch of the land & house has been touched with the gentle love of an artist's heart and eye. They were wonderfully kind hosts who went the extra mile to prepare a simple breakfast with coffee for us each morning even when we were out the door quite early. To them it seemed a simple and obvious gesture, but for us it made all the difference in the world. It's not a luxury hotel, but the elegance, warmth, and charm make it something special. If you care for the richness of simplicity over ostentatious luxury and the warmth of human care over disinterested service, you will appreciate a stay with Mark and Anita. We didn't have time to take advantage of the tipi or the hillside firepit and a good deal more that still remains to be explored on another trip!

Follow the directions given by the hosts! They are beyond helpful and very accommodating. It gets very cold in the winter so make sure to keep the bedroom doors open in order to get heat.

Anita's and Mark's welcoming home is off the beaten path and off the grid, but definitely well worth a visit. Mark was on a canoeing adventure with one of their sons so I only met Anita. Anita is a kindred spirit and salt of the earth. I had a beautiful and relaxing stay and I would recommend it to anyone. Careful the decompress factor is very high at this humble and comfy home in the woods!

Our stay at Anita's and Marks’ was short but wonderful. The pictures don't do it justice, they have a beautiful piece of land, very peaceful, a wonderfully comfortable house, and a tipi! The night of our arrival, there was a big storm, and everyone's electricity was out. We drove in on one of Vermont's many dirt roads, and all the houses were dark. Except this one, which is off the grid, and operates with solar electricity. Mark actually drove out to find us – there is no cell service here – so they had no way of knowing why we were late, which was due to the storm.. Vermont is such a beautiful state, and very different then my state of Maine, where we are most oriented to the water. Speaking of water – there is a wonderful gorge type waterfall pretty close to their house. It is accessible to people who can do a little bit of hiking, and would be a fantastic place to spend several hours. Anita and Mark were wonderful caring hosts, and we hope to go back! As far as creature comfort, we did not suffer – the beds were very comfortable, and we had everything, if not more, than we needed.

Guests are warmly welcomed to our house and land. We will offer simple self-serve breakfast items at the house, and will most likely be in residence during your stay. We are happy to provide suggestions for area activities, dining, and outdoor adventures. You are welcome to come and go as you please, and we are happy to share conversation and breakfast with you, or you can maintain less interaction and more privacy as you prefer.

O domaćinu: Anita

Mark and I live in a beautiful remote setting in central Vermont and love sharing our bit of paradise with others. We are avid outdoor enthusiasts who love to garden, hike, kayak, and explore new and unusual places. We much prefer staying at AirBnbs over staying in stuffy hotels, so we are happy to open our home to others for their travels. Mark is a seasonal landscaper and collects and refurbishes and sells antiques and oddities. I am a nurse midwife and a potter.
