We have two private rooms and a loft available in our cozy Vermont house. Our home is nestled in the rolling forested hills of central Vermont and is close to art and culture in Hanover, NH.
Our house is located in a remote area in the town of Strafford, Vermont and features fields of wildflowers, a tipi uphill from the house, beautiful perennial gardens, and a flourishing organic vegetable garden.
We are off the beaten path but have easy access to all that the mountains of eastern Vermont have to offer. We are close to the Hanover/Norwich/White River area and there are numerous places to hike, fish, swim, mountain bike and kayak nearby.
Our town has a beautiful historic town house to be explored and there is a gorgeous waterfall 3 miles away from our home.
Strafford is home to the historic Justin Morrill Homestead which offers tours of the buildings and gardens.
A car is a necessity as much of Vermont and nearby New Hampshire are rural with very little or no public transportation. Driving times from Boston: 2.5 hours, NYC: 5 hours and 3.5 hours to Montreal.
The Stone Soup restaurant is located in Strafford and offers gourmet cuisine in an old blacksmith shop and is open Thursday to to Sunday evenings with reservations and of note: does not accept credit cards but is well worth this minor inconvenience.
There are numerous restaurant choices in the greater Hanover/White River area. There are also restaurants available in South Royalton.
The only store in Strafford that sells groceries is located 7 miles away, Coburn's General Store and is open daily until 6:30pm except Sunday when it closes at 1pm. Guests sometimes find that when they reach our location that they are not anxious to drive to eat, and so please plan ahead with groceries as desired. Our refrigerator has limited space, and we do offer a cooler with ice packs for your use.
We have a friendly cat that lives at the house, and many hummingbirds and other wild birds.
A walk from the house leads you to a "walk in the woods" that meanders on a loop through beautiful hardwoods with chairs to rest or read a book or meditate in while listening to the babbling brook. It is short and flat and crosses the brook in three places and is a wonderful place to stop and reflect.
There is Internet and wifi available, but no television and cell service is poor to non existent. We do have a landline available for domestic calls.
We look forward to having you in our home!
Guests are welcome to use any of the two upstairs bedrooms or loft area. Guests will have a private bathroom with a shower, keeping in mind that there may be guests renting the tipi and sharing the shower.
Guests are welcome to use the kitchen if you prefer to cook your own meals. There is limited space in the refrigerator, so bringing a cooler would be recommended.
There are gas grills that you are welcome to use. One of them is designated for meat use. We are vegetarians and prefer that you take all meat waste and packaging with you when you leave and clean the grill after using.
Smoking is not permitted anywhere on our land or house. LGBTQ friendly.
Our address is 148 Van Dyke Rd, Strafford, VT 05072.
Please save directions to your phone so that you will have continuous access to directions, as cell service is limited to non existent in much of the town. Here are written directions that you may find useful:

If you are coming on I-89, take Exit 2 (Sharon) and head towards Strafford, which is about 6 miles over the mountain.
At the stop sign turn left.
*Go approximately 2 miles into Strafford Village and take the right hand fork at the town green and travel towards Old City Falls Road, your next right.
Turn RIGHT onto OLD CITY FALLS ROAD and go 2.5 miles to VAN DYKE ROAD (the next left after KENDALL ROAD).
Turn LEFT ONTO VAN DYKE ROAD and go 1.5 miles. The road will wind and get smaller but just keep going and after a big field with a white farmhouse and barn it is ½ mile further ON THE RIGHT. Our mailbox with “ONOFRIO CHUTE” is across from our driveway.
If you are coming from Norwich/Hanover just basically go straight the whole way from Dan and Whit’s, turning left at the triangle/stop sign in the road at Union Village and eventually you will come into South Strafford and will pass by Coburn’s General Store on your right. Continue on to the Stop Sign across from Barrett Memorial Hall (at the jct with Route 132) and then follow directions from the * above.

Mark and I live in a beautiful remote setting in central Vermont and love sharing our bit of paradise with others. We are avid outdoor enthusiasts who love to garden, hike, kayak, and explore new and unusual places. We much prefer staying at AirBnbs over staying in stuffy hotels, so we are happy to open our home to others for their travels. Mark is a seasonal landscaper and collects and refurbishes and sells antiques and oddities. I am a nurse midwife and a potter.
