Teotihuacan, located in the Basin of Central Mexico, was the largest, most influential, and certainly most revered city in the history of the New World, and it flourished in Mesoamerica's Golden Age, the Classic Period of the first millennium CE. Dominated by two gigantic pyramids and a huge sacred avenue, the city, its architecture, art, and religion would influence all subsequent Mesoamerican cultures, and it remains today the most visited ancient site in Mexico.

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
In relation to other Mesoamerican cultures Teotihuacan was contemporary with the early Classic Maya (250 - 900 CE) but earlier than the Toltec civilization ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) CE). Located in the valley of the same name, the city first formed between 150 BCE and 200 CE and benefitted from a plentiful supply of spring water which was channelled through irrigation. The largest structures at the site were completed before the 3rd century CE, and the city reached its peak in the 4th century CE with a population as high as 200,000. Teotihuacan is actually the Aztec name for the city, meaning "Place of the Gods"; unfortunately, the original name is yet to be deciphered from surviving name glyphs at the site.

The city's prosperity was in part based on the control of the valuable obsidian deposits at nearby Pachuca, which were used to manufacture vast quantities of spear and dart heads and which were also a basis of trade. Other goods flowing in and out of the city would have included cotton, salt, cacao to make chocolate, exotic feathers, and shells. Irrigation and the natural attributes of local soil and climate resulted in the cultivation of crops such as corn, beans, squash, tomato, amaranth, avocado, prickly pear cactus, and chili peppers. These crops were typically cultivated via the chinampa system of raised, flooded fields which would later be used so effectively by the Aztecs. Turkey and dogs were husbanded for food, and wild game included deer, rabbits, and peccaries, whilst wild plants, insects, frogs, and fish also supplemented a diverse diet. In addition, the city displays evidence of textile manufacturing and crafts production. Teotihuacan also had its own writing system which was similar to, but more rudimentary than, the Maya system and generally limited in use to dates and names, at least in terms of surviving examples.

Wow, I don't know where to begin. This was an amazing tour by Katherine. Her attention to detail, advise (carry a bottle of water with you) and knowledge of the pyramids was mind blowing. You can see that she's very passionate in what she does and I will highly recommend her. Climbing these pyramids are no joke man, but if kids and older folks can do it, that's all the motivation you need. It also makes you not want to chicken out lol. All in all, when in Mexico City, please do this tour with Katherine if you want to learn about history, and treated like a best friend.

Katherine was a communicative and knowledgable host! It was great to have a private driver for this adventure as oppose to taking the bus. Katherine knew all the tricks... what line to get in first before the crowds, etc. I'd definitely recommend this tour or any other tours Katherine offers. If you are in the Mexico City area, the pyramids are worth the journey outside of the city center-- don't miss out!

Our trip to the Teotihuacan pyramids was incredible--an absolute must-see and do if you are in Mexico City. Hector and Katherine made it so easy and were so accommodating with our time and mix of abilities (we brought our two young children). Katherine was our tour guide and not only was she knowledgeable about the site, but her excitement for its rich history was infectious. This was a highlight of our time in Mexico City. As for the value for your money? You can't go wrong with this tour. It covered travel, our guide and even included an incredible meal afterwards at La Gruta--a dining area in a cave! I don't know how, but Hector even managed to get BOTH our kids to try ant arvae. If that's not impressive, I don't know what is!

The tour was great. It's not to far from the hostel to get to Teotihuacan, and the way up there is interesting as well. Hector explained a lot about Mexico and the surroundings we saw. At the site, there was more than enough time to look around and explore the ruins, while Katherine, Hectors girlfriend, gave an profound explanation about Teotihuacan. Afterwards, we went to a restaurant to have some typical Mexican meal, witch is included in the tour price and a really nice ending of the trip. I recommend this trip if you´re interested in going to the pyramids.
