Beautiful 5p artist's Apartment in former cigar factory in Culemborg near Utrecht and Amsterdam
Visual artist, Caren Simon, offers you the hospitality to stay in her own home studio, where she works and lives in a former cigar factory in the beautiful city of Culemborg in the middle of the country, close to Utrecht (35 km.) and only 60 km. from Amsterdam .
The building is a protected monument and is situated close to the dike, opposite a tennis court, within walking distance from the train station, the beautiful river the Lek with its small beaches, the bird protection area, marina and the old inner city. My apartment offers a great and convenient location for a short or longer stay in this beautiful city.
The apartment (180 m2) is located on the first floor. It is large and has high ceilings with authentic details like old beamed ceilings, original fireplace, industrial cast iron factory windows.
The space has been brought back to its original cigar factory state, a large open space in which my studio is also located. Only the bathroom and the bedroom are closed with a door.
There is one bedroom with a new double bed, two ottoman with sleeping function and a large lounge sofa that always acts as a good spare bed and can be used as a great 5th sleeping place. In the morning you will be awakened by the birds in the tree at the bedroom window.
The living room is elevated upon a platform, the decor is a combination of modern design and vintage. Some of my artwork is exhibited in my home studio. I do trust you with my “art children” and assume that they will be treated with respect.
The open industrial kitchen with four burner stove, oven, dishwasher and refrigerator with freezer is situated on the right-hand side in the middle of the area. There is a big dining table, washing machine with dryer, bathroom with shower and toilet.
If you want to paint you can use one of the 10 easels and there is also a sculpting stand available.
You can easily make your own breakfast or cook your own meal, there are many good shops in the neighbourhood on walking distance. All the supermarkets are open from 8:00 till 21:00. There is also a good green supermarket.

Hello there, my name is Caren. I'm trying to live an inspiring life in order to inspire others. As an artist (sculptor) I organize creative workshops in my studio in the Netherlands and in-company workshops. Besides that I organize creative holiday weeks and retreats in France. It is my goal to create opportunities for everybody to have an authentic, loving and creative life. I love to work with peoples and I love to share my knowledge with them.
I welcome you in my home to enjoy a pleasant and comfortable stay.
Born and raised on Aruba, I experienced an enormous freedom. As a little girl I used to climb trees like a monkey, with my 3 brothers and little sister, build tree houses, run up and down the street without wearing a coat, saught shells, caught and observed butterflies, the rides along the harbour……. But there was also another side. The daily confrontation with a performance-aimed education, in which the notion that studying and developing yourself is the most important thing to survive, was repeated like a mantra.
This background (upbringing) has clearly given direction to my life. During 25 years I have chosen for a professional career in marketing and public relations. My creative thinking abilities have strongly developed in this profession, while there was far less time and space available than desired to focus on, the always present, urge to also carry out my ideas in an artistic manner.
Like a valuable treasure I carry the images of my birth island; formed by the elements of nature, as capricious crater-like rock surfaces; deep, cold, dark caves in which openings and breaches allow the outside light to enter, the always present North East passaat from which the divi-divi-trees thank their typical form ; the savage turbulent sea on the North side of the island which continuously beats against the island; the peaceful atmosphere that goes from the white beaches and deep blue clear sea; the beauty of colours and fragrances, the always present sun and cloud free sky; the beautiful under water world with extraordinary water plants, fish, coral, shells...... I have nourished these memories when I came to The Netherlands at the age of eleven and I still nourish them. They have supported me during the difficult culture transmission.
When I look back on my life, I‘m convinced that all experiences and meetings have made a big contribution to my inner growth and have served as an inspiration source to finally choose freely to express myself in art.
Creating is like a meditation to me; a mental activity in which I connect with myself, entirely away from the world, in my own domain. My sculptures are the external image of what takes place inside of me.
My path has always been crossed by special encounters, inspirers, masters and huge mirrors, who all have contributed in becoming aware of my intuitive capacities and to develop these as well as my talents. The result is a conscience change which supports me daily in making the right choices in freedom.
