My place is close to Hillcrest, Little Italy, Old Town, Heartwork Coffee Bar, Starbucks a grocery store and the ever-important 24 hr donut shop. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and furry friends (pets).
We love The Shack and hope that you will too but there are some things we want you to know about it before you decide to stay here. The Shack was built in 1902 as a temporary house to live in while a larger house was built next door. That means it’s old, charming (in the right light), and, quirky in many ways. We will start with some of the more quirky features and if you make it through the list, it might be just the perfect place for you to spend a relaxing weekend in San Diego.
First, it’s a small space. It’s one room that is roughly 400 square feet, furnished with a full size bed, a dresser and a table that doubles as a desk. There’s no sofa and no closet. The kitchen area consists of a beverage fridge (essential since we are surrounded by breweries), a microwave, a small efficiency refrigerator and a sink. That sink is the only one in the house (meaning that there is not one in the bathroom!). Speaking of the bathroom it’s also small. There’s a cute little claw foot tub, a toilet and a window with frosted glass on the bottom half -- That’s it! The tub/shower can accommodate anyone but is probably most comfortable for shorter folks.
Next, like we stated above, this is an old house and probably nobody expected it to still be standing today. There’s no insulation (we have fans and space heaters), the doors and windows are drafty and sometimes tricky to open/close and some of the windows do not lock (although the neighborhood is generally good and safe). Don’t drop a marble because the floor slopes.
Now for some of what we love about this place. The shack sits on a huge (for San Diego) and entirely fenced ¼ acre lot perfect for four-legged friends. The yard is mostly dirt but there’s also a vegetable garden (help yourself!), small wood deck, private brick patio with propane grill, several seating areas to make up for the lack of seating inside and off street parking for one car. In short, you feel like your staying in the country while you are walking distance to San Diego’s most exciting neighborhoods.
