Nestled amidst the serene hills of rural Portugal and located in the village of Chumbaria, Casa da Rosária offers a unique and eco-friendly retreat. This beautifully restored hemp-lined house is a testament to sustainable living, boasting a permaculture garden and a spacious 3-hectare plot.
Casa da Rosária is one of two houses that have recently been restored in the village of Chumbaria, that dates back to 1441. The village was at its busiest from 1885 to 1975 and would have up to 40 people living and working here at any one time. The village was abandoned in 1975 and restoration work started in 2023. Casa da Rosária has been featured in 3 seasons of the popular Channel 4 series 'Help! We Bought a Village'. It is also often used as a photo shoot location, as you can see in the additional photos.
The house itself is a marvel of modern architecture, combining stylish decor with eco-friendly materials. Inside, you'll find a fully furnished open-plan living area equipped with a kitchen featuring all the essentials, including a fridge, freezer, oven, microwave, induction hob, dishwasher, and a Weber BBQ for outdoor grilling. The cozy lounge diner is perfect for relaxing by the wood-burning stove on chilly evenings, while the private terrace provides a tranquil outdoor space to enjoy the breathtaking views.
Casa da Rosária offers two bedrooms: a king-size bedroom on the ground floor and another king-size bedroom on the mezzanine level. The mezzanine bedroom is accessible via a sturdy ladder suitable for younger guests. The house is also designed for wheelchair accessibility, ensuring a comfortable stay for all.
One of the most distinctive features of Casa da Rosária is its construction with hempcrete, a revolutionary carbon-negative material. This innovative building technique ensures a comfortable indoor temperature and soothing acoustics, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
Beyond the house, the surrounding area offers endless opportunities for exploration. The quiet unmade road leading to the property provides easy parking, and the nearby Serra do Branco village offers a local store and a friendly café-bar. Nature enthusiasts will delight in the abundance of hiking and biking trails right on the doorstep, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Portuguese countryside.
It is only a 20-minute drive to the historic city of Leiria with its medieval castle, restaurants, terraces, bars and famous pastelarias. Chumbaria is also conveniently situated within an hour of many beautiful places and attractions. Coastal beaches such as Sao Pedro de Moel and river beaches such as Agroal. Monasteries such as Batalha and Alcobaca. It is conveniently situated between famous Nazare and Figueira da Foz and Fátima a renowned religious pilgrimage site is a 25 minute drive. There are so many places to explore in this beautiful district of Portugal, Tomar, Coimbra and Aveiro to name a few.

A car is probably needed to access local places. There are only 2 buses a day from Leiria to Chumbaria. Both Leiria and Pombal, which are 20 minutes away have train/bus stations that connect directly to Lisbon and Porto.

Access to Casa da Rosária
Guests can access Casa da Rosária through wide wooden doors. For unloading luggage, there is parking available right outside the house, as well as a car park located approximately 50 meters away.
We will be on-site to welcome and check guests in until 10 PM. For guests arriving after 10 PM, we can arrange a key safe with an access code for convenient self-check-in.
Guests are also welcome to drop off their luggage before the official check-in time, allowing them to explore the area or relax before settling into their accommodation.
