I had a great time at John and Ineke's place. I stayed for two nights. Their house is charming, very clean, and has everything you need to feel comfortable, including towels, shampoo and soap, and a few welcome treats. Ineke did my laundry for a €10 fee. There were also nice touches, like the bed being made up during the day while I was gone, that made it feel like a home away from home.
The very top floor of their house is where the guests stay, and there was one other person staying while I was there. He was quiet but the creaking floorboards and the wash-up sink that was on the other side of my bedroom wall was a bit loud during the night but nothing horrible.
Ineke's breakfast in the morning was so delicious! Coffee, orange juice, yogurt, pastries, eggs, salad, etc. - there was much more on the table than I could eat. It was a great start to the day.
The only thing that would have made the stay better was being closer to Amsterdam or the train station, which was my fault for not researching better (but all part of the traveling experience). This did not detract from the positive experience I had with John and Ineke. It's a 20–30-minute walk from the house to the Hoofddorp Station, and then another 20–40 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal with the express train. It took me an hour to get from their house into Amsterdam Centraal during rush times. Not the end of the world, but if you're looking for something that's a quick commute to town, you might consider somewhere a bit closer to the city center first. Again, this was my fault and nothing of John and Ineke's fault. In fact, John offered to pick me up or drop me off at Hoofddorp Station for a €7,50 fee.
All in all, I had a great time at John and Ineke's place. It's a true local Dutch experience that I would do again. I'd recommend their place to others.
