This beautiful two bedroom apartment with spectacular views of the ocean, Ipanema and Leblon is located in a favela overlooking Ipanema beach. Many guests from all over have stayed here safely and securely seeking a unique local experience.
This comfortable apartment is located in a favela behind Ipanema Beach with easy access to Copacabana as well. It is best suited to young, athletic and bohemian travelers looking for a unique local experience. Note that special rates apply for Christmas/New Years, Carnival and Olympics.
This beautiful, fully equipped two-bedroom apartment (private home) with 13 ft. ceilings and three full-sized beds is newly constructed and, at about 500 feet above sea level in the Cantagalo Favela, offering spectacular panoramic views of Ipanema and Leblon, Two Brothers Mountain (Dois Irmãos), Gavea Rock (Pedra da Gavea) and Pedra Bonita (where the hang gliders take off). All this is only about a 15 min. walk down to either Ipanema or Copacabana beach and a seven minute walk to the Ipanema Metro Station (Sa Ferreira Entrance).
The altitude is high enough that you probably won't need to use the air conditioners and you can leave the windows open while you sleep since there are no mosquitoes up here (rare in Rio!). It is an excellent choice for the more adventurous, athletic and culturally aware traveler seeking more than a beach vacation, wanting to interact more with locals and see how people live here. All this is possible as this apartment lies at the top of the Cantagalo "favela" just behind Ipanema beach, a bustling neighborhood where everyone seems to know each other and kids are always at play in the alleyways. On weekend nights, spontaneous "funk" dance parties frequently occur on the main road leading up to the apartment building.
Until just a few years ago, this neighborhood was completely off limits to outsiders. Today, the neighborhood is a very safe place since the government instituted a "pacification" program complete with a new police station right next door to the building. Americans, Canadians, South Africans, Chileans, and numerous Europeans have stayed at the apt. without incident. There’s even a bank branch up here now and numerous small shops selling everything from bread to beer to eyeglasses. Many foreigners stay in this neighborhood, and a group of them renovated an apartment nearby as a nightclub.
To reach the apartment from Copacabana, you can walk up the road or take the VW shuttle bus (R$3.50) or ride on the back of a mototaxi (R$3.50). From Ipanema, you can walk up the road or take the Ipanema Metro Elevator Tower up to the neighborhood and walk the rest of the way, or, during weekdays, take the “Brizolão” education center elevator that takes you from the Ipanema street level right to the base of the apt. building! From there, it’s several flights of stairs to reach the fourth (top) floor where the apartment is located. Hence, this apartment is best suited to more “athletic” travelers who don’t mind walk-ups. The view, the cool breeze and the exciting, more edgy nature of the neighborhood definitely makes the effort worthwhile.
The apartment itself has wireless internet, a 42” LED TV that can connect to your notebook via HDMI, DVD player, an Onkyo stereo system, a wireless HP inkjet printer, a telephone and a fully equipped kitchen with gas stove, microwave, toaster oven, frig, washing machine, etc. A taxi can be arranged to pick you up at the airport for approximately R$120 and will deliver you to the base of the building.
PLEASE NOTE: special rates and conditions apply for special events such as Christmas/New Years, Carnival, Easter and the World Cup.

I’m originally from Minas Gerais State near the border with Bahia State and my family moved to Rio over 20 years ago. I come from a big family (we were originally 10 children!), all in Rio now (plus cousins!), and we help each other out a lot and usually get together on special occasions. I work in Rio's largest medical laboratory processing samples sent to the lab from a network of clinics in town. I recently started college (in Ipanema) and am studying to get my bachelor’s degree in business. The money I earn from renting my apartment I use to pay for college (we don’t really have student loans here). I’m very independent and hard working and everything I have, including my apartment, I’ve achieved pretty much on my own. I like action and suspense movies and dancing and I'm very social, so I have many friends from school and from work. I especially like plants and have many potted plants in front of my door. Although my English is limited, I have someone here who speaks fluently and is helping me with all aspects of my apartment rental, so feel free to contact me in English. I look forward to meeting you when you visit and will be happy to give you some suggestions of things to see or do while in Rio!
