This apartment is in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. We are a mere one minute walk to the Red line train to downtown (15 minute ride). We are also within walking distance of Andersonville/Edgewater.
We are the top floor of a three flat. The building itself is a little older but the apartment is spacious, private, and comfortable. There are four bedrooms. I (Steve) live in one. Sometimes the others are rented out (more often in the warm months), sometimes not.
This room is in a vintage building on the north side of Chicago. The apartment is huge (4br, two living rooms) and fairly quiet, being on the top floor. We’re super closer to the Red Line train, which runs all night, so you never have to worry about having trouble getting back to the place at night.
The neighborhood is mostly Vietnamese, with great and relatively cheap food, plus nice shops. In my experience it’s one of the most unique neighborhoods in the city. Tons of character.
We like to keep the environment laid back, so we hope you feel comfortable either hanging by yourself in your room or lounging in the common spaces.
The apartment itself also has a lot of character, true to its vintageness. Personally, it’s my favorite of all the places I’ve lived. There are some compromises, as it is an older building. For example, I personally love the wood floors, but they’re also old and worn and sometimes attract dust. The water pressure is good enough for me, but it’s not the most powerful shower in the world. (UPDATE: We have a new higher-pressure shower head! Much better showering experience now.) But I do my best to keep the common spaces clean. Also of course the bedrooms are cleaned between guests and you'll always have fresh sheets. Basically, if you want a place that’s gleaming and new like a hotel room, this probably isn’t the best place for you. If you want to feel like you’re staying at your friends’ nice but not 100% perfect place, it might be!
One other thing to be aware of: unfortunately we only have one shared bathroom. So if you need to be somewhere on time, please note that there’s a chance you might have to wait a few minutes for someone to finish showering or using the bathroom. If this is a significant downside to you then maybe consider booking a place that has a private bathroom.
Most people who come visiting the city are really happy with this as a place to come back to after a day spent out exploring. The living room and the bedrooms are comfortable places to spend time in. It’s also good as a place to lay your head even if you’re just in town for a night or two—we get a lot of people who like to see live music in the area and appreciate this as a close option to come back to afterward.
We really want people to feel comfortable using the common space, like the living room and the kitchen. I always encourage people to make themselves at home when they’re here.
Please feel free to use the kitchen, the common areas of the apartment, and of course the shared bathroom and shower. The only rooms that are off limits are, logically, the private bedrooms of the residents who live here full time.
We also have Wi-Fi, of course.

I’m perfectly happy to talk to guests. I aim to be as helpful as I can (ask me about using my membership card to the Art Institute). I’m happy to answer questions and give whatever advice I can about the neighborhood and city. Of course, you’re under no obligation to interact with me or any other guests if you just want peace and quiet.
I do my best to be available, but I also sometimes have a life and obligations outside the apartment. I try to be here to check everyone in personally, but every so often I have a friend check a guest in if need be. If you need anything at any point, please feel free to contact me or Peter in person or on the phone/app.
Please note that there's only one bathroom and sometimes we have multiple guests at once. So I hope you can exercise consideration in terms of time and
Also (and this applies especially when there are multiple guests), I’m usually around the apartment and can respond quickly to anything you need. I do have a life and obligations outside the apartment, so sometimes I spend the day at the art museum, or the movies, or a friend’s place. If you ever need anything, you can always be in touch by phone—I’m usually not far and if I am, Peter or someone else I know will probably be available to help out.
I do my best to keep a clean place, especially in the common areas. But sometimes, for instance, someone leaves some hair in the shower drain or a few dirty dishes in the sink and it’s not until later that day/night that I’m able to take care of it. Usually this isn’t an issue. But if you think it sounds like it might be a problem for you, then maybe consider booking a private space.
Also, FYI, sometimes I watch a friend’s cat for a few hours or days at a time. The cat doesn’t go in the guest rooms, however.

I don't think we would request any specific rules outside of common sense. Obviously no drugs, no unannounced guests, and no damaging of any personal property within the apartment is expected and required. Other than that we just reiterate that we are a relaxed environment and want to help you make the best of your trip to Chicago. Let us know if you have any other questions before you book, and happy apartment hunting!
Smoking is allowed only on our back deck, that is totally removed from the apartment itself. So if you are a smoker, you are happy and welcome to indulge back there.

When I have the opportunity to travel, I love meeting people in the know with the area, whether it's a short jaunt like Boston or across the globe into Southeast Asia. I hope folks coming to my place feel like they are entering into a local-oriented experience. Not just checking into a sterile hotel with no one to suggest a starting point, but into a real environment with someone who is entrenched in the Chicago experience.
