History of the house
Sea J's, KI is built from remnants of the original house of George 'Fireball' Bates and is verified as the oldest stone house in South Australia, predating the first Europeans in 1836 - certification is displayed on the wall in the fire lounge room.
Bedroom 1 was the town's Post Office during the First World War. All of South Australia's mail was distributed from this room. The original door is still in use and features the letter slot and holes where messages were posted.
The adjoining garage (no guest access) was the town's blacksmith's shop, next door was the butcher and across the road is the Island's oldest church. This was the original town centre.
