First of all, let me set out our qualifications. We have been coming to Santa Cruz annually (usually for the Wharf to Wharf) for over 15 years. We know our way around and we know what's what. This was our first time renting a place. It's hard to put into words how good this place is. If you, like me, have ever run the Wharf to Wharf (or driven down the coast)--you meander by all of those super high-end, gated, homes on East Cliff and West Cliff and think--"Wow, I wonder who lives there?" One year, we saw Steve Martin sitting in the driveway of one of them. Well, this is one of those places. And you can actually rent it. Patrice was out of town, but we got to hang out with her husband, Rod, who is super-cool. Their guest house (which is what this is) is finished out with the highest quality materials. There is an unobstructed view of the lighthouse and the Yacht Harbor entrance. The pictures fail to capture how remarkable the location is. Imagine going to all of your normal "view" places like Pleasure Point, Crow's Nest, Johnny's, Rio Del Mar, etc., and thinking, "Damn, this place sucks compared to where we are staying." There is a Weber Grill, a hot tub, a fire pit, and ample outdoor seating. Inside, there is a fully stocked kitchen with tons of dishes, utensils and everything else you would need. The linens, towels and beds are super-comfortable. The TV is set up with Apple TV and Amazon and we were easily able to access our own accounts and watch our video library. Parking is easy and it is less than a block from the Yacht Harbor where there is lots of local wildlife such as the sea otter that occupies the slip right under the Murray Street bridge, harbor seals basking on the planks, sea gulls, crows and birds of prey (who the crows apparently do not like).
