I serve a delicious, hearty & healthy breakfast each morning. This sunny (mostly) quiet oasis in East. Harlem is a short walk to the bus and 10 minutes to the metro (subway, train). Here, people are mostly Spanish & African American, as well as Asian and Caucasian. All are hard working & kind.
This light, airy, clean, beautifully renovated apartment (approximately 450 square feet) has a cozy, private bedroom just for you. It is small but accommodates most needs perfectly well. If you are part of a couple or need an extra room for a friend or family member, we have another private bedroom that should fit the bill. Both rooms are furnished with the most comfortable and environmentally responsible bed in the world (with special memory foam by Keetsa). The singles room has a brand new desk, dresser, plenty of closet space and several mirrors. The couple's room is larger, brighter and with a full sized bed for two. Both rooms provide a luggage rack, hangers, heater or fan, maps, guide books, hair dryer, iron, towels, bathrobes, face cloths, just about anything you might need for your stay here.
There's internet access throughout the apartment. There is plenty of clean filtered water available at all times. In the morning, I provide fresh, delicious, organic, healthy breakfast choices for each day of your revitalizing R&R stay here.
As the owner and other person sharing this space, I will be your host. I love people and enjoy sharing my wealth of information about the city's sites, cultural places and exciting day and night life.
My space is two flights up and located right in Manhattan, NYC, on the upper east side of Manhattan, in East Harlem. Here you'll find a mixed population of mostly Hispanics and Blacks and a few Asians and Caucasians like myself. We have bus transportation two blocks away and that can take you either to the bus going directly downtown (along "Museum Mile" with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Frick, etc) or to the local train ("subway,""metro") at 116th Street and Lexington Avenue. If you don't take the bus, the train station is a walk away (six blocks - 3 long and 3 short). The metro will let you off near most of the major museums, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Frick, the Jewish Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, El Barrio Museo, etc. We are also not that far from Central Park, a long walk and perhaps a 10 minute bus ride.
The local train (#6) also goes directly to other tourist sites, such as the South Street Seaport, Wall Street, Chinatown, Little Italy, the Staten Island Ferry and the old Brooklyn Bridge, . We are a bus ride from the Cloisters Museum in upper Manhattan and it takes just 20 minutes on the express train line to reach Union Square in lower Manhattan, a stones throw from the East and West ("Greenwich") Village. In addition, there are trains (#2, 7, S & E) that connect to any part of the west side of Manhattan, i.e. The Museum of Natural History, Times Square, the Theater District and the lovely High Line.
If you're into shopping, nearby, we are three short blocks from a large mall, where you'll find Costco, Old Navy, Marshalls and Target. If you're into the outdoors, locally, we are two blocks from the East River with its river path for bikers, joggers and strollers and boats, yachts, kayaks at different times of the year.
This is a lovely, sunny apt in a (very) safe, quiet and peaceful neighborhood. Building neighbors consider one another family. I look forward to your stay and sharing it all with you!
The guest(s) have access to private bedroom(s) (single's has a door with lock); the other with a door that slides closed; a (relatively small) beautiful clean bathroom (w/shower, bath, sink, toilet, cabinet; electrical outlet and all amenities you might need (shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste); a relatively small kitchen (with filtered water, cups, bowls, washer/dryer if necessary, water heater or tea or coffee maker). the living room is relatively large with a bench/sofa, plenty of cushions, pillows; and three chairs (one of which i usually occupy); an air conditioner, extra fans, a printer (if needed), two desks, one of which i occupy; extra blankets, pillows, sheets, etc. i have a european cell phone charger plug in one or the other bedroom as needed; extra outlets, american cell phone chargers, etc, etc.
Interakcija s gostima
I will usually be present during your stay. i have an intense work schedule, but i work from home so i'm available to answer questions and interact as needed to insure your needs are met.
I am always working to improve the comfort and well being of my guests. i am open to suggestions and to know of any special needs i may address. i also wish to be informed of any way in which the conditions here do not sufficiently or accurately reflect my descriptions. i am happy to change them so future guests will be happily satisfied with their choice.
Host's Requests for an Enjoyable Stay
Arrival and Departure
Please make every effort to arrive the first time before 10:30 pm, IF at all possible. If there are days you plan to return home later than, say 11 pm, please let me know in advance if possible. Please let me know what time you plan to leave your last day. On that day, please be sure you have all your belongings, to leave any maps (etc) you may have borrowed and to place the keys back on top of the bedroom desk.
If I'm not here, please detach the little key from the loop, place the big key (and loop) on the desk, exit with all your belongings, lock the door with the little key and slip it under the door. If you forget and take it with you downstairs, you can slip it into my mail box (#5).
Food/Drink ~ with a Topping of Compassion
This is a vegan household and so I ask my guests not to bring in any food that contains dead animals (cows, pigs, chickens, fishes, shrimps, etc), or their body parts or any products taken (stolen) from them, i.e. dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, ice-cream), eggs, honey.
Because there is little space in the refrigerator and the kitchen is relatively small i also request that you bring no other food into the apartment. I have a full, varied and delicious breakfast waiting for you in the morning. It will certainly delight and satisfy you. For lunch, dinner and snacks, there are many wonderful places to eat in NYC, including ones right in the neighborhood. I will be happy to recommend some to you.
The Non Human Companion
I lost both my elder dogs this past year; however, occasionally i may care for dogs of neighbors and friends. if you do not like having a dog or two around, let me know and i will schedule this around your needs.
Clean and Careful
There are no critters in my home (bugs, mice, rats) and I hope to keep it that way. Please be careful with crumbs (i.e. from breakfast) and let me know if I need to sweep, mop or clean up any place. The cabinet to the right of the fridge has a place for recycled materials (paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, glass). It is clearly labeled. Cartons must be rinsed out, so feel free to leave them on top of the counter and I will complete the process.
I do not accept smokers. I am sensitive to the residue odors, even if you smoke outside.
I like to keep a low profile in my building in terms of my airbnb hosting, so i would therefore prefer that once you are in for the evening, you remain in. Same with the morning. Once you leave, please enjoy your day outside. If you do need to return mid day (to nap, regroup, shower or whatever), if possible, please let me know in advance. If anyone in the building asks who you are (they most probably won't), please respond that you are a friend visiting.
Locks and Lights
Large key is for downstairs. Turn handle and key at the same time. The small key is for the apartment door, only the TOP lock. The door doesn’t lock automatically when you shut it. Therefore, when exiting please lock the door even if I’m here. That way, I know you have the keys and know how to use them. When returning (in the evening or night), please turn the (top) knob to lock the door. Please remember to leave the keys your last day/evening here. If I am here, please leave the keys on the desk. If i’m not here, please detach the little key from the loop, leave the large key (and loop) on the desk. Then exit with your luggage and the little key; lock the door and slide the little key under the door. It does fit.
Please turn off all lights and electricity when not in use for any length of time (i.e. when you shower, eat breakfast in the kitchen or come talk to me). Most lights turn on, from the BOTTOM only. the slider is to adjust the amount of light NOT to turn off and on. Please turn off and on using the BOTTOM little switch only.
Bathroom - Shower/Bath
Please feel free to use shampoos, soap, anything in the bathroom. The shower rod is not strong enough to hold anything, so please hang towels, face cloth etc on hangers in your room.
please put blue bath mat down in bath, not outside, and please rinse under hot water and hang back up to dry when done. please check for hairs around the drain and put them in toilet paper and in the garbage. then spread out wide the shower curtain so no parts are touching and it will dry and not get moldy. Feel free to leave any of your own personal bath items in the bathroom during your stay.
Please alert me to your temperature needs and preferences, for example, especially in the summer, when it can get very warm. We (the dog and I) are fine with air conditioning or not (windows open), though we prefer the latter (for energy, money and fresh air conservation). If you need, there is a heater (white) or a fan (black) in your closet. Also feel free to open or close your window as you wish. It takes a little effort, so if you need assistance, please let me know.
Your Presence is a Gift
Having you stay here is a gift. Many guests have brought me presents, even hand made items. I appreciate the generosity of heart; however, if you wish, I would prefer instead that you donate to the organization to which I’m dedicated - Reaching Out for Animal Rights! (ROAR!) Inc - non profit - working for a compassionate, healthy, just, sustainable, egalitarian, peaceful and loving world. We are on line and you can donate there. Small amounts are fine. Alternatively. if you like, we distribute t-shirts, tank tops, tote bags and hoodies, also for a minimal donation. These are listed on the website store as well. Otherwise, just remember, sharing this space with you, meeting and hosting you, your "presence" here, is more than enough of a present for me.
Comfortable and Carefree
Please let me know of any concerns or questions you may have, so I can help make your stay here as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
PS These requests are printed out and accessible here.
I am active in the creative arts, video production, drawing, painting, writing (non fiction, songs, poetry, comedy). I run a non profit organization dedicated to educating people about ways to help make our planet more sustainable, how to improve human health and how to show compassion to (non human) animals, through adopting a plant based diet and lifestyle. i design and produce t-shirts, which my organization gives away for a donation.
in my former life, i taught early childhood education for 10 years during which time, i obtained a master's degree in education (accelerated learning) from cambridge college). i tutored math, taught yoga and became a certified massage therapist, healing and energizing people, this way, for eight years.
i have a lovely son, age 35 who lives in massachusetts. i visit him a few times a year.
i work out of my home where you'll find me when i'm not out walking (or jogging with) the dogs (3x/day) or attending meetings or other events, whether home or out, you can always reach me on my cell phone. i've lived most of my life in new york city, in many of the boroughs, manhattan, queens, brooklyn so i can help with sites to visit and travel directions.
i enjoy reading novels, but since i've signed up for netflix last year, catching up on old and new movies, seems to consume large chunks of free time. my favorite movies are shawhank redemption, the matrix, fight club, little big man, crash, american beauty, my life as a dog, braveheart, etc.
i'm a friendly person and enjoy meeting new people. this apartment brings me joy and i'm thrilled to share its comfort and beauty. i know you will have a wonderful stay here and i look forward to being your host.
