Što ćete raditi
You will experience a personalised tour of a unique wildlife refuge, where birds roost amidst an active geothermal environment. We will meet at a central location and take a short walk on a very easy path along the lakeshore. After about 5 minutes, we will stop at the first of several viewing locations for a closer look at the birds. I have a spotting scope which will allow you to see the birds at high magnification.I will find the birds for you and tell you about their ecology, life history and conservation. You are very likely to see scaup, dabchick, grey teal, Australasian shoveller and several species of shag (cormorant), along with large numbers of some more common duck and gull species. We may see gulls taking a warm bath, hundreds of scaup bobbing in the lake, shags coming in to roost and small bevvies of dabchick floating by. We may also see Caspian terns, pied stilts and banded dotterel, depending on the season. I will point out natural, historic and cultural features that we pass. If you are a keen birder, I can also advise you about other birding locations, both in the Rotorua area, and further afield.

I am an experienced guide with many years of hands-on conservation work with NZ birds. This has ranged from critically endangered shorebirds and seabirds on the Chatham Islands, to kiwi and kokako in the Central North Island, and international migratory shorebird research. I have worked for the Department of Conservation monitoring birds around NZ, and as a ranger in Tongariro National Park. I have introduced thousands of visitors to the wonders of NZ birds while working as a shoreguide for the internationally renowned Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre (Firth of Thames). I love sharing my knowledge and passion for birds. I grew up in Rotorua, beside the lake. This gives me in-depth local knowledge of both the natural and cultural history of the area. I can also provide advice on where to see various bird species, in Rotorua and beyond

Gdje ćete biti
We'll follow a secluded path through native vegetation along the lakeshore to several viewing locations. Geothermal steam will swirl around us as we watch birds on a nearby small island through the scope. We will then follow the path for about 5 mins to our next stop, looking further across the lake, and get out the scope again for a closer view. Resuming our walk, we arrive at our final viewing point, close to the lake with waterfowl at our feet
