This is an amazing opportunity to experience hands-on Japanese cooking in a relaxed, family environment. You will learn to make a 6 course meal with sushi and vegetarian tempura (4 kinds of vegetables) from scratch, from slicing the fish, preparing the rice, and putting them together that looks beautiful and tastes delicious. Side dishes include edamame, home-made pickles, miso soup etc.
Once we have prepared everything, we set the table and sit down to enjoy the food while having a friendly chat.
Finally, at the tea ceremony, you will get to make your own matcha tea and drink it with a Japanese sweet. The philosophy behind is to slow down and appreciate smaller things in life.
By the end, you will learn to make two of the most popular Japanese dishes, tempura and sushi, for your friends and family back home; but also have a much deeper knowledge of Japanese life. There is no better way to learn about a culture than cooking and eating with a local family for a few hours.
This activity will suit anyone interested in Japanese cooking in a more relaxed family home environment, away from a corporate feel of restaurants. Those interested in Japanese family life will also enjoy, as you will visit a family home and learn about family life. We are not a typical family as we are bilinguals (English & Japanese), but you get the feel of how families cook, eat, and live in Japan.
