What you'll do
Experience the cultural heart of Auckland, on a 2-hour Home Fires of Tāmaki (Auckland) tour in Ōrākei. A short trip from the hustle of the central city, this magnificent whenua (land) is one of Auckland’s most tranquil locations.
Meet me, your kaiarahi (guide) at the Michael J Savage Memorial, overlooking the spectacular Waitematā harbour.
As ahikaa (keepers of the home fire of Auckland), I will provide a first-hand experience of the rich history of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei (local tribe), how we practise our cultural traditions and village life in modern day society.
Soak in picturesque 360° views towards Orākei Marae (traditional meeting house), looking across the harbour to Rangitoto Island, Auckland City and beyond. The photo opportunities are limitless.
Explore abandoned barracks and native bush, as you walk through our award-winning regeneration project “Ko Te Pūkākī”, while your experienced kaiarahi shares history and cultural tales of our tribe and Auckland.
Finish the tour at Takaparawhau, a significant location in our history with the opportunity to sit with me, your guide and ask questions, or use the time to take more spectacular pictures.

This is my pepeha (my story) in my native language Māori of how I am here today.
My canoe, my mountain, my ocean, my tribe, my sub tribe, my descendant, and my mum and dad who had me.
I have traveled the world, I have seen amazing places and I have learnt a lot about different nationalities and cultures. Now I want to share my culture - the Maori culture with visitors to Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland).
My iwi (tribe) is Ngati Whatua Orakei and with me, you will hear our stories.

More tips
Please carry a raincoat and umbrella and wear comfortable walking shoes. Some days the grass can get quite wet so waterproof walking shoes are perfect!
The walking is pretty easy and we go slow so lots of time to stop and take in the views.
